Dam Grouting Techniques & Tests

This document provides information on grouting methods for dams. It discusses drilling techniques, water intake tests to determine permeability, conditions requiring grouting, grout ingredients and mix design, grouting equipment and processes, and field and laboratory tests of grouts. The grout mix uses cement, fly ash, silica fume, and admixtures in a specified proportion designed by CWPRS. Grouting is done in stages from bottom to top using a double drum mixer, compressor, and other equipment.

Methods of Drilling
 Percussion Drilling – not recommended for Drilling in
Dam Bodies – as it produces heavy vibrations – Speed
of drilling is High as Compared to diamond drilling.
 Diamond Drilling – recommended for drilling in Dam
bodies – Very Low Vibrations – Speed is very Less.
Water Intake Test

• Drilled hole must be washed and must be saturated with

water for 24 to 48 hrs
• Double Packer should be used.

Lugeon Value = Loss of water in liter per minute per meter

dept of drilled hole under pressure of 10 ATM maintained for
10 mins in a drilled hole of dia 46 to 76 mm diameter

Lugeon Value = Loss of Water In Liters x 10 atm

depth(m) x Time(min) x Pressure(atm)

Note- 1 ATM= 1.03kg/cm2

GROUT INGREDIENTS
Temghar Dam Repairs (Leakage Controlling Measures)
 Cement
 Fly Ash – It is used to reduce heat of hydration and
shrinkage.
 Silica Fume - It is used to reduce permeability.
 ADMGP 1A – It is a Binding agent (optimizes sealing and
packing in conjunction with cement as principal binder. )
 SPG1A - It is used to enhance the flow, Imparts higher and
efficient impermeability, higher packing and sealing of the
void,
 ACC2025 - accelerates setting of cement and facilitates
speedier operation for plugging jetting water in gallerias or
down stream jets plugging.
 Water -
GROUT MIX DESIGN
Grout Mix Design Is Prepared By Central Water &
Power Research Station Pune ( CWPRS )

• Mix Proportion Of Cement: FlyAsh: Silica = 80:18:2

 Water/Cementitious Material Ratio = 0.65
 Admixtures % By Weight Of Cementitious Material
( ADMGP1A ) = 2 %
 Admixtures % By Weight Of Cementitious Material
(SPG1A & ACC2025 ) = 5 ml per kg of
Cementitious Material
Final Mix Proportion :-

• Cement = 100 Kg
• Fly Ash = 22.5 Kg
• Silica Fume = 2.5 Kg
• ADMGP1A = 2.5 Kg
• SPG1A = 625 ml
• ACC2025 = 625 ml
• Water = 80 litr
METHOD OF GROUTING
