ENERGY
RESOURCES
Energy Resources
Are the opportunities an area
offers to generate electricity
based on its natural conditions
and circumstances .
Some of these energy resources
are obvious; an area might
contain coal, oil, wood, or gas.
FOSSIL
FUELS
a natural fuel such
as coal or gas,
formed in the
geological past
from the remains of
living organisms.
Describe how fossil
fuels are formed
Fossil Fuels is a fuel
formed by natural
processes, these
fuels are formed in the
Earth over millions of
years from decayed
organisms and produce
carbon dioxide
when it burnt.
Different types of
fossil fuels
There are 3 types of
Fossil Fuels, which
can all be used for
energy:
Coal
Oil
Natural gas
How Coal is formed
Coal is formed over
millions of years by
decay of land
vegetation. When
layers are compacted
and heated over time,
deposits turn into coal.
Different stages of
coal formation
There are 4 stages in coal formation:
peat
lignite
bituminous and
anthracite.
The stage depends upon the conditions
to which the plant remains are subjected
after they were buried – the greater the
pressure and heat, the higher the rank
of coal.

How is coal used as
a fossil fuel
The most significant
uses of coal are in
electricity generation,
steel production,
cement manufacturing
and as a liquid fuel.
How is Oil formed
Oil is a liquid fossil fuel that
is formed from the remains
of marine microorganisms
on the seafloor.
After millions of years the
deposits end up in rock and
sediments where is trapped
in small pieces. It can be
extracted by large drilling
platforms
How is oil used as a
fossil fuel
Oil is carried in
pipelines and large
tanker ships. A refinery
changes the oil into
products like gasoline,
jet fuel and diesel fuel.
How is natural
gas formed
Natural gas is formed deep within the Earth
from decomposed organic matter. Plants and
marine animals die and are buried. Over time,
this matter is compressed as more and more
layers form over it.
When this organic material is exposed to high
pressure, it is broken down into hydrocarbons
and becomes natural gas or oil.
How is natural gas
used as a fossil fuel
Natural gas is a non-renewable
hydrocarbon used as a source
of energy for heating, cooking, and
electricity generation.

GEOTHERMAL
ENERGY
Geothermal energy refers to the
production of energy using the internal
heat of the Earth’s crust. This heat
comes from the radioactive decay of
minerals and continual heat loss from
the earth’s original formation.

disadvantages
Explain how heat from inside the earth is
tapped as a source of energy (geothermal)
for human use slide
The different temperature ranges are
general, and practices may vary according
to the economic conditions of the
particular location.
