There are 14 punctuation marks that are commonly
used in English grammar. They are the period (.),
question mark (?), exclamation point (!) , comma
(,) , semi colon (;) , colon (:) , dash (--) , hypen (-) ,
parenthesis (()) , brackets ([ ]) , slash (/) ,
apostrophe (‘) , quotation marks (“) , and ellipsis
(…).

PUNCTUATION ERRORS
1. EXTRANEOUS APOSTROPHES
People putting apostrophes where they don’t
belong.
2. UNNECESSARY QUOTATION MARKS
The use of single or double quotation marks when
nothing is being quoted.
3. MISSING COMMAS
Without commas, sentences can become run-on
blocks of text without any breaks.
4. TOO MANY COMMAS
Just opposite of missing commas, it’s include an
excessive amount of commas in one sentence.
5. EXCESS EXCLAMATION
Too many exclamation points in a body of work
overwhelms the reader and devalues each
individual exclamation points.
6. IT’S VERSUS ITS
It’s all too easy to misuse this world because its
rules are different .
7. HYPEN VS DASH
All horizontal lines in text are not created equal.
8. SEMI-COLONS VERSUS COLONS
Semi-colons are often misused, particularly
where a colon should be used.
9. QUOTATION MARK PLACEMENT
Sentence-ending punctuation marks often
go outside of quotation marks rather than
inside, which is where they belong.

1. Don’t confuse “it’s” and “its.
Example: Apple will announce it’s new iPhone
soon. It’s a big year for the company.
2. Don’t use an apostrophe to pluralize nouns.
Example: Those home’s were built in the
1960’s.
3. Don’t write run-on sentences.
Example: I left work early but I missed my
train and I waited in the station for 40 minutes
until the next one finally came so I did’nt get home
until 8 p.m.
4. Don’t overuse commas.
Example: I went home, and ate dinner.
5. Don’t use dashes and hyphen
interchangeably.
Example: I’ll buy the iPhone 8 – if I save up
enough money.
6. Don’t use semicolons and commas
interchangeably.
Example: The traffic was crazy today; but I
arrived at work on time.
7. Don’t use semicolons and colons interchangeably.
Example: I ate three things for lunch; an apple,
and a bag of chips.
8. Don’t place periods and commas outside
quotation marks.
Example: “The train was delayed for 40 minutes”,
the anonymous source told INSIDER.
9. Don’t overuse exclamation marks.
Example: The iPhone 8 will reportedly cost $999! I
can’t believe it! I also can’t afford it!
