Population Pyramid: M. Zubair Lecturer Kmu

A population pyramid graphs the age and sex distribution of a population. It shows the percentage of males and females at each age. The shape of the pyramid reveals aspects of a population like fertility rates, life expectancy, and whether the population is growing, stable, or declining. There are four main types of population pyramids: stationary, expansive, constrictive, and declining. A population pyramid provides insight into a population's reproductive capabilities and likelihood of continuing into the future.

Population pyramid

• A population pyramid, also called an age

pyramid or age picture diagram, A Population
Pyramid is a graph that shows the age-sex
distribution of a given population. It a graphic
profile of the population’s residents. Sex is
shown on the left/right sides, age on the y-
axis, and the percentage of population on the
x-axis
• It is also used in ecology to determine the
overall age distribution of a population; an
indication of the reproductive capabilities and
likelihood of the continuation of a species.
Types of population pyramid

• While all countries' population pyramids

differ, four general types have been identified
by the fertility and mortality rates of a cou
Stationary pyramid
Stationary population pyramids
are those that show a somewhat equal
proportion of the population in each age group.
There is not a decrease or increase in
population. it is stable. Austria has a stationary
population pyramid.
• Expansive pyramid
• Populations with this shape usually have high
fertility rates with lower life expectancies
Constrictive pyramid
• There is a lower percentage of younger
people. Constrictive population pyramids
show declining birth rates. The United States
has a constrictive population pyramid.
Stages of Population Pyramids

There are five stages of population pyramids:

high fluctuating, early expanding, late
expanding, low fluctuating, and natural
decrease.
