Pediatric Care and Health Strategies

Pediatrics is the study and treatment of children from conception through adolescence. Pediatricians are doctors who specialize in children's health, focusing on improving physical, mental, behavioral, psychological and social well-being as well as reducing morbidity and mortality. Pediatrics is an independent field because children's health issues differ from adults' in ways like age-related responses to illness. Common diseases in developing countries include protein-energy malnutrition, diarrhea, malaria, pneumonia, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, which account for 75% of pediatric admissions. Strategies to improve child survival include primary healthcare, reproductive health programs, and integrated management of childhood illness.
