Stairlift Phase1 Project (MODIFIED)

The document describes a project to develop a prototype staircase elevator. It is being developed by 3 students under the guidance of a faculty member. The objective is to create a platform that can move up and down stairs on railings using a motor and wheels. This would allow loads up to 15kg to be lifted. The proposed design could be used where space is limited or budgets are low to assist those who have difficulty with stairs. It provides details on the hardware, software, working mechanism and advantages of the staircase elevator system.

ABSTRACT

 The main objective of this project is to develop a

prototype staircase lift using railings.
 A staircase lift is a platform that moves up or down the
stairs on railings with wheel attachment that is
connected to a motor.
 This prototype model can be used to lift loads up to 15
Kg.
 The proposed model can be used in places where it is
difficult to install an actual elevator or an escalator due
to insufficient availability of space or low budget.
INTRODUCTION
 In this world, where technology is advancing at a rapid speed,
we keep finding ways in which we can reduce our work, make
things easier, efficient , time saving and comfortable.
 In this proposed model, we have tried to minimize our work by
using staircase elevator system which can lift heavy loads.
 Here, in this system we use railing on which rollers have been
placed and a platform is built on it. We use a DC motor coupled
to a winch.
 This proposition can be further improvised in future to help
people who are physically disabled and old age people to move
up or down the stairs easily without any effort.
LITERATURE SURVEY

In paper [1]: Development of an  The main purpose of this paper was to develop an
integrated staircase lift for home access inclusive home access solution that integrates the
by Johannes L Mattie, Jaimie F Borisoff, staircase and a lift into a single system.
Danny Leland and William C Miller.  Idea behind this paper was to develop a module
based on an iterative design process which
involves various aspects such as stake holder
feedback, proof of concept, hazard analysis etc.
In paper [2]:Electric-powered wheelchair  The purpose of this article was to provide an
with stair-climbing ( EPW-SC ) ability by overview of the EPW-SC development for the
Weijun Tao, Junyi Xu and Tao Liu last two decades and to give insight into future
trends.
 The classification of EPW-SC was provided based
on various stair climbing mechanism.
 The advantages and disadvantages were based
on these four aspects namely; the control
method, cost, energy consumption and
adaptation to different stairs.
Reference Description

In paper [3] :Multi-Sensor, High Speed Autonomous  The paper gives proposal to design a small track
Stair Climbing by Daniel M. Helmick, Stergios I vehicle and build an algorithm necessary to
Roumeliotis, Michael C. McHenry, Larry Matthies. autonomously navigate stairs at high speed.
 They have used set of accelerometers, vision
based edge detectors, an array of sonars.
 The main disadvantage of this module is that its
speed doesn’t decrease during the end of stairs
which results in abrupt landing.
In paper[4] : SMART STAIR LIFT FOR DISABLED AND  This paper mainly focuses on developing an
ELDERLY by [Link], [Link] Kumar, [Link] outdoor as well as an indoor staircase lift that
Mounika, [Link],K Prabhakara Rao, I A Pasha. can be used to move disabled and old people up
or down the stairs .
 They have tried to automate everything by
using a mobile application to operate the
system.
 They use a heavy duty hoist to pull platform
up/down the stairs.

WORKING OF THE PROJECT
 When the supply is given to the SMPS, it converts AC supply into DC which is
the required source for the motor used in this operation.
 The winch is coupled to the shaft of the motor which rotates in either
direction by changing supply polarity given to the DC motor.
 The platform with rollers is placed on the railings which is used for moving
the loads up/down the stairs.
 The hook at the end of the winch is attached to the base of the platform.
 when the supply is given, the motor connected to the driver and motor
controller unit starts rotating which starts the winch operation.
 There are limit switches at either ends of the railings. When the platform
hits the limit switches, it stops operating and motor changes its rotation
direction.
 When supply is given again, motor rotates in the other direction. This makes
the platform to move in other direction. Thus the system successfully can
move load up/down in stairs

Hardware & Software requirements

Hardware components:- Software:-

• Winch  Motor controller unit ( MCU )
• DC motor  Motor driver
• Switched mode power supply
• Railings
• Platform with rollers
• Staircase setup
• Accessories for fitting purposes
• Limit switches
ADVANTAGES
 Cost effective
 Space saving design
 Long shelf life
 No usage of counter weights as in case of traditional elevators.
APPLICATIONS
 In small scale industries where escalator installation is not feasible
these staircase elevators can be installed.
 For people who have difficulty in lifting goods, this system can be
implemented to move daily provisions and other goods up and
down the stairs.
 It can be further extended by using heavy duty motors to help
disabled and old age people move from one storey to another.
Approximate cost of the project

1. Electric winch and DC motor unit - Rs. 6000

2. Switched mode power supply - Rs. 1000
3. Motor driver - Rs. 1500
4. Motor controller unit - Rs. 1000
5. Limit switches and other auxiliaries - Rs. 0500
6. Railings and rollers - Rs. 4000
7. Miscellaneous - Rs.1000

Total approximate cost - Rs. 15000
