Understanding Telemedicine Systems

This document provides an overview of telemedicine. It defines telemedicine as using telecommunications and information technologies to provide clinical healthcare from a distance. The core principles are that telemedicine eliminates distance barriers and improves access to medical services. It works by allowing communication between patients and medical staff using technology to transmit medical data. Telemedicine requires being physician directed and integrated into clinical operations while preserving patient relationships. It has evolved using medical instrumentation, telecommunications, and information technologies. Telemedicine provides advantages like emergency healthcare access and saves lives, while disadvantages include high costs and potential errors without experience. It has applications in information exchange, networking hospitals, and remote training. The future of telemedicine for India's public healthcare system looks promising.

 Introduction
 What is Telemedicine
 Core principles of telemedicine
 How it works
 Types of telemedicine
 Compression of bandwidth
 Evolution of telemedicine
 Technologies involved
 Advantages
 Disadvantages
 Applications
 Conclusion

3
 Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication
and information technologies in order to
provide clinical health care at a distance.it
helps eliminate distance barriers and can
improve access to medical services that
would often not be consistently available in
distant rural communities.

4
 These technologies allow communications
between patient and medical staff with
both convenience as well as the transmission
of medical , Imaging and health informatics
data from one site to another.

5
 Is only a tool
 Must be physician directed
 Must be integrated into established clinical
operations and routines
 Physician-patient relationships must be
preserved

 Indian space research organization
 NEC Telemedicine program for North-Eastern
states
 Apollo Hospitals
 Asia Heart Foundation
 State governments
 Telemedicine technology also supported by
some other private organizations

17
 It saves lives in the emergency situations,
while there is no time to take the patient at a
hospital.
 In many rural communities or remote places
or post-disaster situations and consistent
healthcare is unavailable. Telemedicine can
be applied in such places or situations to
provide emergency healthcare.

18
 The overall cost of telecommunication
system, especially data management
apparatus and practical training of medical
professionals is great.
 Virtual clinical treatment decreases human
interaction among the healthcare
professionals and patients that increases the
risk of error in clinical services, if the service
is delivered by inexperienced professional.

19
 Information exchange between Hospitals and
physicians.
 Networking of group of hospitals.
 Linking rural health clinics to a central
hospital.
 Videoconferencing between a patient and
doctor ,among members of healthcare teams.
 Training of healthcare professionals in widely
distributed or remote clinical settings.
 Instant access to medical knowledgebase ,
technical papers etc…..

20
 Telemedicine being increasingly used for
providing health care services.
 Effective and efficient in managing resources
and time for delivery of health care .
 Telemedicine systems are evolving:
distributed systems and
centralized server based
 Looking for a great healthy future of our public
healthcare system in our country .
