Sampling: Data, Class Interval, Class Size, and Sampling

Data can be grouped or ungrouped, with grouped data organized into classes defined by certain properties. A class interval represents the width of each class, calculated by taking the range of the data and dividing by the number of desired classes. Sampling then involves selecting a subset of data from the classes to analyze and make inferences about the overall data.

SAMPLING
DATA

• Can be defined as groups of information that

represent the qualitative attributes of a variable or
set of variables
• Any set of information that describes a given
identity
• Can be classified into grouped data and
ungrouped ddata
UNGROUPED DATA

• Any data gathered first before any intervention or

analysis has been done
GROUPED DATA

• Data that has been organized into groups known as

classes
• No longer ‘raw’, as data has been classified and
has undergone a level of data analysis
CLASS

• A data class is a group of data which is related by

some user defined property
• Each of those classes is of a certain width and this is
referred to as the class interval or class size
• Class interval is always a whole number

• 𝐶𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙 (𝑖) =
𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 (𝑛)
• Example:
• Highest value: 29
• Lowest value: 1
29−1

28
•𝑖=

• 𝑖 = 2.8
