Seed Germination Percentage Guide

We will determine the percentage germination of mongo seeds using the following steps: 1. Take 10 mongo seeds and place them in the plastic cup. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of cotton. 2. Wet the cotton with water until it is moist but not soaked. Cover the cup with a plastic cover with small holes. 3. Place the cup in a warm area away from direct sunlight and observe daily. Count the number of seeds that sprout. 4. Use the formula: Percentage Germination = (Number of Seeds Germinated/Total Number of Seeds Tested) x 100 5. Record your observations and percentage germination. This will help determine the viability of your mongo

Determining the
Percentage
Germination of
Seeds
Seed Germination

Germination is the development of the

seed into a young plant or seedling.
Seed stage- is a fertilized
and ripened ovule which
may develop into a plant
by germination.
Radicle stage –
the first root of
the seed will
start to develop.
Sprout stage- the
embryo or seed
will start to sprout
the hypocotyl.
Seedling stage-It is
refers to the young
plant when seeds
germinate.
Two types of Planting Seeds

1. Direct Seeding- direct sowing of the seeds to the

land.

2. Indirect Seeding- you need to produce the seedling

then transplant the seedling.
Determining the Percentage
Germination of Seeds

Germination percentage- is an
estimate of the viability of a
population of seeds.
Rule #1: If you test 100 seeds, the number of seeds
germinated equals the percentage germination of the
seeds.

 FORMULA:
Percent of Germination = No. of Seeds Germinated
X 100
No. of Seeds Tested

Percent of germination= No. of seeds germinated

Sample Problem:

Mr. Y tested 100 seeds of eggplant using

the rag doll method, 85 seeds germinated.
Now, what will be the percent of
germination of the seeds?
The grade 11 students tested 100
seeds of mongo using the seed trays
method, 93 seeds germinated. What is
the percent of germination of the
seeds?
Rule 2. If you test less than or more than 100 seeds use
the formula below in computing the percentage
germination of the seeds.

Formula:
PG = No. of Seeds Germinated
X 100
No. of Seeds Tested
Sample Problem:

Mr. X tested 125 seeds of hybrid

tomato and 105 germinated. What is
the percentage germination of the
tomato seeds?
Mr. X tested 98 seeds of hybrid corn
and 93 germinated. What is the
percentage germination of the
tomato seeds?
Rule #3. If you found out that the percentage
germination of your seeds is below 80, you need to adjust
your seed bulk. Use the formula below in adjusting the
seed bulk.

Adjusted amount of seed = amount of seeds needed

X 100
% ger min ation
Sample Problem:

You needed 200 seedlings to plant your

garden. You found out that your seeds
have only 75 % germination. How many
seeds will you sow?
The Agri-crop students needed 546 seedlings
to plant your garden. You found out that
your seeds have only 65 % germination. How
many seeds will you sow?
“We can't become what we need
to be by remaining what we are.”

- Oprah Winfrey
Activity:
1. Mr. Cruz tested 155 seeds of tomato which he took from the school
seed bank. He found out that only 125 seeds germinated. What is
the percentage germination of the tomato seeds?
2. Ms. Perez needed 405 seedlings to plant your garden. You found
out that your seeds have only 60 % germination. How many seeds
will you sow?
3. Mr. Pineda tested 100 seeds of red pepper using the petri dishes
method,92 seeds germinated. What is the percent of germination
of the seeds?
