What is the flu virus?
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza
viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the
lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can
lead to death.
Flu is not just a common cold
| 6
What are the symptoms?
Flu is different from a cold. People who are sick with flu often
feel some or all of these symptoms:
Fever* or feeling feverish/chills • Muscle or body aches
Cough • Headaches
Sore throat • Fatigue (tiredness)
• Runny or stuffy nose
Some people may have vomiting and
diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

INFLUENZA IS EASILY TRANSMITTED
Everybody in any age group is at risk, especially
• Pregnant women
• Young children
• People suffering from chronic diseases
• Senior adults, mainly elderly
• Healthcare Workers

INFLUENZA LEADS TO SUBSTANTIAL COSTS
In the US, the annual direct costs (hospitalization,
doctors' office visits, medications, etc.) of influenza are
estimated at $4.6 billion
Additionally, up to 111 million workdays are lost
because of influenza at an estimated $7 billion/year
in sick days and lost productivity

VACCINATION HELPS REDUCE COMPLICATIONS FROM
CHRONIC DISEASES
Influenza increases the risk of
complications for people with non-
communicable diseases(1) which is the
number 1 killer in the world

VACCINATION IN THE WORKPLACE
• Influenza Vaccination in
Healthy Working Adults has
been shown to reduce not
only the rates of influenza-like
illness but also the number of
work days lost
• Studies from various countries worldwide have reported 27 to
156 days of work loss prevented per 100 persons vaccinated

WHAT IS OUR QUADRIVALENT VACCINE?
The first Quadrivalent vaccine offers:
quadrivalent vaccine Broader protection
in the Philippines • The proportion of co-circulation of the two B
linage is variable and unpredictable
• Launched in 2013 • The two B lineages that co-circulate worldwide
in the US are included
• Licensed for patients Better fit the epidemiological evolution
from 6 months of age, • The proportion of co-circulation of the two
children and adults B lineages varies by season and region
• The co-circulation of the two B lineages evolves in
• Including two unpredictable proportions
A-strains (A/H1N1

and two B-strains • Reduction of up to 21 million of influenza cases

and B/Victoria)
• 16 000 influenza-related deaths

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION
• Influenza is a serious and highly contagious disease that impacts
companies through decrease in employees’ productivity.
• Influenza Vaccination in Healthy Working Adults has been shown to
reduce not only the rates of influenza-like illness but also the number
of work days lost.
• There are two major influenza B lineages circulating globally and it is
very difficult to predict which lineage will predominate
• The quadrivalent flu vaccine could further reduce influenza cases and
influenza-related hospitalizations and deaths.
• The best time to vaccinate is as soon as the vaccines become available.
