Understanding Glare and Eye Conditions

Glare is difficulty seeing in bright light and can cause temporary blindness. There are two types of glare: discomfort glare which causes an instinct to look away from bright lights, and disability glare which impairs vision. Glare reduces visibility by constricting pupils, reducing scene brightness and contrast, and scattering light. Common causes of glare include dry eyes, cataract, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Dry eyes are treated with eyedrops while cataracts, glaucoma and AMD may require surgery or laser treatment.

GLARE

PRESENTED BY
VANLALZAWMA
ROLL NO.29
B.OPTOMETRY(3RD SEMESTER)
GLARE

• It is a condition when it is difficult seeing in the presence of bright

light resulting in poor vision or temporary blindness.
TYPES

• DISCOMFORT and DISABILITY glare.

• Discomfort glare results in an instinctive desire to look away from a bright
light source or difficulty in seeing a task
• Disability glare impairs the vision of objects without necessarily causing
discomfort
REDUCING FACTORS

• Glare can reduce visibility by:

• reduction of brightness of the rest of the scene by constriction of the pupils
• reduction in contrast of the rest of the scene by scattering of the bright light
within the eye.
• reduction in contrast by scattering light in particles in the air
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

• 1. Dry eyes
• 2. Cataract
• 3. Glaucoma
• 4.Age-related macular degeneration(AMD)
DRY EYES

• This happens when your eyes can’t make enough goood quality of tears

• Symptom:
• 1. Itching, pain and red eyes
• 2. Foreign body sebsation in the eyes
• 3. Difficulty in opening eyelids
• 4. Photophobia
TREATMENT OF DRY EYES:

• 1. Eyedrops and ointment

• 2.Tear duct plug
• 3.Tear stimulating drugs
CATARACT

• It is a cloudy(opacity) of the lens of the eye that cause

progressive,painless loss of vision.

• Symptom of cataract:
• 1. Glare.
• 2. Blurred vision.
• 3. Problems distinguihing dark blue from black.
• 4. Mild double vision and required more light to see well.
TREATMENT OF CATARACT:

• 1. Slit lamp examination.

• 2. Opthalmoscope examination
• 3. Surgery to remove cataract and place an intra ocular lens.
GLAUCOMA

• Glaucoma is prigressive optic nerve damage that leads to irreversible

loss of vision.

• Symptom of glaucoma:
• 1. Blind spots.
• 2. Redness and pain eyes.
• 3. Blurred vision and discomfort eyes.
TREATMENT OF GLAUCOMA

• 1. Eyedrops.
• 2. Laser surgery.
AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION(AMD)

• It is cause by deterioration of the central portion of the retina. It is

considered as incurable eye disease.
• Symptoms of AMD:
• 1. A general haziness in overall vision.
• 2. Blurry spot and blind spot in your field of vision.
• 3. Decreased intensity or blindness of colors.
• 4.Visual distortions.
TREATMENT OF AMD

There is no specific treatment but the following ponts can reduce

AMD:
1. LASER SURGERY
2. Maintaining a healthy weight and exercise.
3. No smoking.
