Kota Super Thermal Power Station Overview

Kota Super Thermal Power Station (KTPS) is located on the left bank of the Chambal River in Kota, Rajasthan. It is the first coal-based power plant built in Rajasthan. KTPS uses a Rankine cycle to generate electricity by heating water to create steam that spins turbines connected to electrical generators. The plant has undergone several expansions, currently operating 5 units with a total capacity of 1310 MW. A training visit to KTPS provided the author practical experience in power plant operations and maintenance.

KOTA SUPER THERMAL POWER
STATION
INTRODUCTION

KTPS is first coal based power plant in

Rajasthan.

It is ideally located on the left bank of

Chambal River at up stream of Kota Barrage.

In 1973 Central Electricity Authority

prepared a project report for power station.

 In 1976 planning commission cleared project

report.

 Land measuring approx 250 hectares was

required.

BASIC IDEA OF ELECTRICITY
GENERATION

A thermal power station is a power plant in

which the prime mover is steam driven.

Water is heated, turns into steam and spins

a steam turbine which drives an electrical
generator.

After it passes through the turbine, the steam

is condensed in a condenser and recycled to
where it was heated; this is known as Rankine
cycle.
TECHNICAL LAYOUT OF KSTPS
COOLING SYSTEM
In KSTPS hydrogen cooling system is employed for generator
cooling.

Hydrogen is used for cooling medium primarily because of its

superior cooling properties & low density.

Elimination of fire risk because hydrogen will not support

combustion.

Corona discharge is not harmful to insulation. Since oxidation is

not possible.
TROUBLES OF USING IMPURE
WATER

Water Boiler (corrosion)

(impurities) STEAM

Turbine blades
(Damaged)
WATER TREATMENT PLANT
D.M. Plant :- This plant consist of two streams with
activated carbon filter, cation exchanger and mixed
bed exchanger.
When water passed an activated carbon
filter will remove residual chlorine from water.
Other impurities are removed by the cation
exchanger and mixed bed exchanger.

C.W. Plant :- Circulating water pump house has

pumps for condensing the steam for condenser.

B.C.W. Pump House :- Filter water after

demineralization is used for bearing cooling from
BCW pump house.
ADVANTAGES

FUEL USED IS QUITE CHEAP.

LESS INITIAL COST AS COMPARE TO

OTHER STATIONS.

IT REQUIRES LESS SPACE AS COMPARE

TO HYDROELECTRIC PLANTS.

IT CAN BE INSTALLED AT ANY PLACE

WHERE COAL IS AVAILABLE.
DISADVANTAGES

IT POLLUTES ATMOSPHERE

BECAUSE OF SMOKE , FUMES AND
ASH PRODUCES DURING
COMBUSTION.

ITS RUNNING COST IS HIGH AS

COMPARE TO HYDROELECTRIC
PLANT
CONCLUSION

K.S.T.P.S. has established a record of

excellence & earned various productivity
award from The Ministry of power,
Government of India.

I have gain a little bit experience what is

the environment in company it will prove
very beneficial for increasing my practical
knowledge.
