Modals are special verbs that provide additional information about the function of the main verb that follows. Some characteristics of modals are that they never change form and are always followed by an infinitive without "to." Different modals indicate mood, such as intention, probability, permission, ability, instruction, willingness, prediction, and more. Examples are given of modals like can, could, may, might, must, ought to, shall, will, and their various uses and meanings.
