Slab Bridge Design Guide

Slab bridges use a concrete slab as the main load-carrying component of the bridge structure. The slab is supported by beams, columns, walls, or the ground. Main reinforcement in the slab is designed to resist flexure, fatigue, control cracking, and provide minimum reinforcement. Slab bridge cross-sections can be solid slabs, solid slabs with cantilevered footpaths, or voided slabs with cantilevered footpaths. Loads on slab bridges include live loads from traffic, sidewalks, and impacts as well as dead loads from the slab itself.

Components of a slab bridge
 Sub- Structures  Super Structures

Footing – Distributes super structures Slab – Support all kinds of live load and
load on soil dead load and transfer them on abutment

Abutment – Acts as a load bearing all Edge Beam – Prevent cracking of slab edge
which transfers super structure load and support stringer load
on footing
