WATER LETTUCE LEAVES (PISTIA
STRATIOTES) AS MAIN COMPONENT
IN THE PRODUCTION OF
BIODEGRADABLE PLASTIC BAGS
RATIONALE
The increasing demand of plastics has been increasing uncontrollably. This high demand for
plastics has been a major contributor to the world’s present garbage problems.
Plastic cannot be disposed of through burning since plastic fumes cause wide range of
ailments. Even recycling, widely endorsed to reduce solid wastes, does not effectively reduce
the volume of used plastics.
Biodegradable plastics contained additives that cause them to decay more rapidly by the
presence of oxygen.
The Water Lettuce are considered one of the most notorious aquatic weeds. It proliferates
rapidly in lakes, dams and irrigation channels and clogs them
Water-based plants derived sugar molecules like lignin cellulose and hemicellulose, raw
materials for making biodegradable plastic.
OBJECTIVES
The research study aimed to determine if
Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) can be used as
an effective main component in the production
of biodegradable plastic bag.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1. Is water lettuce leaf (Pistia stratiotes) is as effective as
the commercial plastic bag in terms of:
a) Tensile Strength
b) Reactions to acids and bases
c) Flammability
d) Biodegradability
e) Folding
2. What treatment is the most effective in terms of:
a) Tensile Strength
b) Reactions to acids and bases
c) Flammability
d) Biodegradability
e) Folding

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN AND STATISTICAL
TREATMENT
The researchers will use the Completely
Randomized Design in the study.
One Way ANOVA will be used to analyze and compare
the Tensile Strength, Biodegradability, Reactions to
Acids and Bases, Flammability and Folding of the
different treatments in the study.
METHODS OF WASTE DISPOSAL
Since all the material that will be used are
biodegradable and non-toxic to humans and to the
environment, the materials will be collected, put in a
trash bag and bury them in a compost pit.
RESEARCH UTILIZATION AND DISSEMINATION
The study will be presented at Bacarra National
Comprehensive High School as a project on
Practical Research II.
