Dorothy Furnace 6 was constructed in 1963 by U.S. Steel in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, becoming the largest and most modern of its kind after World War II. The furnace illuminated the night sky over Duquesne for over 20 years until 1983, when U.S. Steel began losing over $1 billion and shut down the furnace, eliminating 1,200 jobs. By 1984, the site had been demolished and is now home to the American Textile Company pillow factory and a food bank.
