INTRODUCTION TO PLM AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN DESIGN
WHAT IS PLM ?
Product Lifecycle management
product
design and managing the series ultimate retirement or
development of changes disposal.
WHY PLM
more transparent and improve efficiencies.
more innovations,
shorter product development cycles development
better determination of the status
customer focused products
Retention of a product’s , traceability and better quality.
Lower product cost due to use of less resources,
better efficiencies and shorter time-to-market cycle
STEPS INVOLVED IN PLM
R&D Feedback/ Planning
Department Innovation

INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN IN CATIA
CATIA Stands for Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application.
It was Developed by Dassault System.
It is widely used in Design of Automotive and Aeronautical parts.
Use of this Design Tool will make the Design process more easier, efficient and
more precise.
In India, Most of the companies are using CATIA for the Design of products and
knowledge of these Tools will provide a huge scope for Job in Design Field.
WORKBENCHES IN CATIA
Sketcher
Part Design
Drafting
Assembly Design
Sketcher: - In this Workbench I learned how to draw different profiles and
constraining it.
2 types of Constraints that are used:
a) Dimensional Constraints: - It is used to apply dimension to the drawn profile.
b) Geometrical Constraints: - It is used to establish Geometrical relationship to
the profile like perpendicular, parallel, concentricity, symmetry etc.
Part Design: - In this Workbench I learned how to convert the profile into 3-D
model. The Dress-up features like applying Fillets, Chamfers can be done in this
workbench. Making Holes and Cut-outs can be done easily in this workbench.
Drafting: - Drafting is defined as the conversion 3-D model into drawings and
aligning the different views on the sheet
Angle of Projections are the angles required for representation of 3-D Model into 2-D
drawing during Drafting.
Types of Angle of Projections
First Angle of Projection
Third Angle of Projection
Assembly Design: - In this workbench I learned some basics of
assembly design. The two different types of Assembly method used in
CATIA are as follows:
a) Top Down approach: - In this method, the required parts for
assembly will be created in the assembly workbench itself and
assembled. This method is limited to very less no. of parts.
b) Bottom-up approach: - In this method, the required parts for
assembly will be created by using different workbenches and will be
taken one by one during assembly. Huge no. of parts can be used for
assembly.
SPECIFIC OUTCOMES
Introduction to PLM and its importance in Design
Real time experience on designing of parts using CATIA
Understanding about the angle of projection while drafting of the part
To get an idea of understanding the drawings of different part
Understanding the types of Assembly Process used in CATIA
This Internship will be very helpful for getting the Job in Design Field
