‘The Hunger Games’ shows people living in fear of the government, which is a
key feature of dystopian fiction. This is demonstrated by the quotation “the
boldest form of dissent they can manage. Silence.” This shows us that the citizens
of District 12 cannot speak freely about how they feel about the government.
The use of the minor sentence “Silence.” illustrates the lack of power the citizens
of District 12 have. Their voices have been suppressed to such an extent by the
government that the only way to display their frustration is through making no
sound. Collins’ intention here is to warn against the unchecked power of
governments as, in dystopian fiction, the government often control people
through fear of punishment which is clearly shown in this extract.
