WHAT IS SHIELDED METAL ARC
WELDING OR SMAW?
• Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as
manual metal arc welding (MMA or MMAW), flux
shielded arc welding or informally as stick welding, is a
manual arc welding process that uses a consumable
electrode covered with a flux to lay weld.
• Or simply involves joining two or more pieces of metal
together to form a single piece.
4 Basic Welding Positions
What is Weld Carbon Steel Pipes in
Fixed Horizontal Position (5G)?
In the 5G position, the pipe is fixed at one or both ends and
the welding operator must travel in one of two directions, either
vertical-up or vertical-down. Depending on the location of the
pipe, the application may also require welding either overhead or
in a flat position.
Pipe welding are classified according to the position of the pipe,
not of the weld.

Steps in Performing Steel Pipes in
Horizontal Positions (5G)
1. Bevel Pipe at 30 degree. (Use Grinder)
2. Perform tack welding and check the gap and alignment.
Align the two pipes using clamps.
3. Perform root pass.
4. Clean root pass. (Use Steel brush or chipping Hammer)
5. Weld subsequent pass or filling.
6. Final Capping.
Step 1 – Bevel Pipe/Groove Pipe
A weld groove is defined as “A channel in the
surface of a workpiece or an opening between
two joint members providing space to
contain weld metal.” Groove welds fill the space
made between sections of the workpiece.
Bevel your pipes at 30 degrees using
Grinder.
Step 2 – Perform tack welding
Step 3 – Root Pass
Root pass simply refers to the 1st pass in any weld
process, which makes the two members being welded,
one structure.
Step 4 – Filling
Fill pass is the amount of weld bead
necessary to fill the next weld joint.
Step 5 – Final Capping/Final Pass
Cap is the final weld bead in a
weld joint.
