Molecules to Organisms:
Structures to Process
By: Alyssa Walker
Common Core
• “Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and
animals (including humans) need to survive” (Common Core
Standards6).
• Students will learn through experience what plants
need to survive
• Students will learn and see first hand how a seed
transforms into a flower
SEED TO FLOWER
• In order to show first graders
how molecules turn into
organisms we will need; seeds,
water, pots, and soil.
PLANTING OUR SEEDS
• 1st step: fill your pot with soil
• 2nd: place your seeds one inch deep and then cover it back up
• 3rd: place your pot in the sunlight and water daily
LIFE CYCLE
• 1st you will start out with a
seed your seed will then
grow into a cotyledon, then
into a seedling, eventually
growing into an adult plant,
and lastly it will become a
flower
Nutrition
• In order for our seeds to grow into beautiful flowers we need to:
• Water them Dailey
• Keep them in the sunlight
• They need nutritious soil and air
Summary
• We can observe through our plants what they need to survive. We
have learned that in order for a seed to grow into a flower, our seeds
need sunlight, water, air, and soil. We have also learned the life cycle
of a flower and we will observe this first hand through our plants.
Check For Understanding
• Activity: each student will draw the life cycle of a plant and discuss
with their neighbor what a seed needs to grow.
