Manchuria: Japan's Invasion and Impact

Manchuria was a resource-rich region in northeast Asia that Japan invaded in 1931 to gain access to natural resources and land to solve its population problem. Japan used a railway explosion as an excuse to invade and quickly took control of key areas. The League of Nations condemned Japan's actions but imposed no sanctions, so Japan remained in Manchuria and continued expanding its empire in China. This weakened the League's authority and strengthened Japanese nationalism and militarism.

General information

 Manchuria was a vast geographic region in northeast Asia.

 Spread across 1554000 square km.
 Includes the Liaodong peninsula.
 Abundant in natural resources.
 Once invaded by Japan, it was run by a puppet government.
Why was Manchuria important to
Japan
 Japan needed more natural resources to increase its industrial
productivity, which could be found in Manchuria.
 Japan needed the extra land to solve their growing population
problem.
 By invading Manchuria, Japan had full access to the Trans-Siberian
railroad, which led to more efficient trading.
 By conquering Manchuria, it would enlarge its empire and increase
nationalistic movements across Japan.
Triggers of the Japanese invasion

 The 1929 depression heavily affected Japan, requiring immediate

action. (invading Manchuria)
 The Japanese blamed the local population for an explosion along
the South Manchurian Railway, using it as an excuse to invade the
nearest town.
 Japan was ordered to retreat by the league of nations, which they
agreed to
Course of Events

 Since September 1931 to February 1932 Japan had attacked and

conquered Manchuria after the accusation of Chinese of
sabotaging the Trans-Siberian Railway in controlled by Japan Korea.
 Within a few days, Nippon State took control of the key strategic
place of Manchuria. By March Japan attacked and took over
Shanghai thus China asked the League of Nations for help. After
publication of Lytton Report, the LN declared that Japan should
back out of Manchuria, which resulted in Japan leaving the League
and continuing the occupation. Due to no sanctions from the West
Japan stayed in Manchuria, eventually attacking China in 1937.

Aftermath

 In result of Manchuria events, Japan lost its reliability as a peaceful

country in the eyes of the West. It also maximised the feeling of
nationalism. The profits of the annexation of Manchuria were so
appealing to the public and government that it decided to
increase taxation on people to maintain the army on the mainland,
which gave so much power to the military that slowly led to the
military dictatorship in Japan. As for China, it lost Manchuria, which
was called from that point Manchukuo, with a puppet rule
dependent on Japan. For League of Nations, the incident of
Manchuria was the first sign that the matters were getting out of
hands, and was one of the first significant failures that highlighted its
weaknesses. At the end, this and raise of nationalism helped
Mussolini and Hitler to create Tokyo-Rome-Berlin Axis
