Aristotle on Friendship Types

Aristotle believed that friendship was necessary for a good life. He identified three types of friendships based on utility, pleasure, and goodness. Friendship based on utility involves both people benefiting from the relationship, but it is shallow and easily dissolved. Friendship based on pleasure is drawn from qualities like wit and looks, but it is fleeting and unstable. The highest form is friendship based on goodness, where people wish good for friends regardless of other benefits, though this type of complete friendship is rare to obtain.

• Man- being a social animal- interacts with other people

and forms different relationships. Chief among these
companionships are friendships or philia.

• Aristotle’s ethics- what makes a man good? So, goods

such as friendship, need to be practiced for a virtuous life.

people are drawn to the other’s wit, good

passions and pleasures are great influences in
their lives.
Characteristics

between lovers.

group of friends.
Drawbacks
• Aristotle views this type of relationship as
fleeting and target of constant change.

• It is built upon passion and is motivated by

pleasure.

• It is unstable and volatile for it misleads you.

Outcome
• The person who selfishly seeks the benefits of
pleasure will callously seek out , good food,
and other pleasures, not caring who gets hurt
along the way.

• People who seek only pleasure for themselves

are not treating themselves well, just as
people who use friends for pleasure are not
treating those friends well
