Introduction
Look at the Picture
What have you noticed in the picture?
Fire has a lot of uses. It keeps us warm, helps us
cook our food, and give us light. It said to be the
greatest discovery of man.
However, fire can also cause harm and damage. It
san destroy properties and can kill people in an
instant as well.
In this lesson, you will learn
more about fire and fire safety.
After going through this module ,
you should be able to:
1. Conclude that fuel and oxygen
are needed to produce/sustain
fire
2. State that different fuels have
different kindling points or
start to burn at different
temperature.
3. Practice safety precaution in
using fuel/fire
4. Follow safety / emergency
rules in case of fire.
Discussion
Activity 1
Make list of things that can easily catch fire.
Where are they being kept?
Activity 2
Extinguish fire.
Materials:
small metal trash can paper trash
wood shavings dried twigs
5 gallon pail of water matches
Procedure:
1. Fill up the 5 gallon pail of water.
2. Get a metal garbage can. Place wood shavings, dried twigs
and enough paper trash into the garbage can about half full.
3. Light a piece of paper using matches and throw it in the
trash can. Stand near the trash can but within a safe
distance to watch the fire. Observe how the paper catches
fire .
4. When fire is big enough that its flames are almost on the
mouth of the trash can, get the pail of water and pour it
into the flames.
5. Observe how the water extinguished the fire.
Answer the following
1. Describe what is needed to start fire.
2. List ways and means to extinguish fire.
Generalization
The third thing necessary to start a fire is
heat. The amount of heat it takes to set a fuel on
fire is called the kindling temperature or ignition
point. Different materials have different kindling
temperatures. Paper has a lower kindling
temperature than wood. The tip of a match has a
very low kindling temperature. Heat caused by
the friction of striking a match against a
matchbox makes enough heat to set the match on
fire.).
Every fuel has two kindling temperature or
ignition temperature.
KINDLING TEMPERATURE OF VARIOUS FUEL
Degrees
Celsius/ Fahrenheit
Paper 450 degrees C /842 degrees F.
190-260 degrees C /375-500
Wood
degrees F.
Tip of match 360°F
Gasoline 246–280 °C/475–536 °F
Coal 600 F
FIRE SAFETY
• Keep matches, lighter and candles away from children's reach
• Always store combustible materials in a well-ventilated space and
away from any source of heat.
• Turn off the LPG tank when not in use. Always check the hose of
LPG connected to the stove for any possible leak.
• Dispose of cigarette butts properly.
• Do not leave the kitchen when food is being cooked.
• Unplugged any electrical appliance when not in use.
• Check electrical wiring in your house and working place.
• Equip every member of your family with the knowledge
on how to extinguish fire. .
In Case of Fire
1. Know the source of fire. DON’T Panic, inform other
members of your family.
2. DON'T HIDE, GO OUTSIDE! Fires are scary, but you
should NEVER hide in closets or under beds when there is
a fire.
3. To escape during a fire; Fall & Crawl. It is easier to breath I
n a fire if you stay low while getting out.
4. If your clothes are on fire; Stop, Drop, and Roll until the
fire is out. Shout for help, but don't run. Running makes
fire burn faster.
5. Use baking soda or damp cloth to put out fire caused by
chemical. Do not use water.
Its about time to check your
understanding.
Draw if it is right thing to do
and if it is not
EXERCISES
_____1. Avoid playing with matchsticks and lighter.
_____2. Leave unused electrical appliances plugged for
you to save effort when you want to use them
again.
_____3. Place lighted candle on top of a wooden table.
_____4. Let a licensed electrician regularly inspect the
electrical wirings of your house.
_____5. Keep excess firecrackers at home after New Year.
_____6. Try to put out fire even it will cost your life to
be a hero.
_____7. Cover your self with a wet blanket when trying
to escape from fire.
_____8. Memorize the phone number of the fire
department of your barangay.
_____9. Turn off LPG tank after use.
_____10. Use water in putting out fire
caused by gas explosions.

Fire is a friend if when it serves as fuel or as
source of heat and light. It is a foe when it burns
homes, plants, and building.
There are rules to follow to prevent and in case
of fire.
Without sufficient oxygen, fire cannot begin,
and it cannot continue. Oxygen may be remove
from a fire by smothering it with aqueous foam or
some inert gas (carbon dioxide) or dry chemicals,
or by enclosing it where the fire will quickly use
up all of the available oxygen.
In putting out fire;
1. Take away air
2. Remove heat from fire by pouring water.
3. Remove the fuel
4. Use fire extinguisher.
