HISTORY OF UNCP HEALTHY START
• UNCP Healthy Start is a grant funded program used to provide
resources to mothers and families that are pregnant or have children
two and younger.
• It is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA) of the U.S. Department of health and Human Services (HSS).
• Healthy Start started as a pilot program in 1999 and became fully
funded through a grant from UNCP in 2001.
• Provides case management throughout Robeson County.
SERVICES PROVIDED
• Case Management for clients
• Car seat safety/CPR/Sleeping techniques (SMART Start)
• Parenting classes
• Health education classes for expecting and nursing mothers
• Community groups

• Breastfeeding Support
• Father Intuitive
• Community Outreach
• Seeks additional resources for mothers and children
GOALS
• To decrease the rate of infant mortality in Robeson County
• Helping pregnant mothers carry children full term
• Increase prenatal care in the first three months of pregnancy
• Decrease birth rates in teen pregnancy
• Increase care after birth of baby
• Decrease number of premature births
MISSION STATEMENT
To enhance the perinatal service system and improve
overall health outcomes for mothers and infants in
Robeson County.

• Decreasing Pre-term births in Robeson County
• Wants every pregnant mother to last at least 38 weeks.
• Continuing to decrease the infant mortality rate in
Robeson County
• Want to begin focusing on mothers with substance abuse
• High numbers of babies are testing positive for some type of drug when they
are born
