Social Networking Sites
Social networks are becoming a trend where the
focus is on building online communities of
people who share the same interests and
activities.
Allows people to connect with old friends and stay
updated on their daily lives.
Allows a freedom of expression through exposure.
Creates a community for people to share opinions
and ideas.
Benefits and Pitfalls of Social
Networks
Benefits:
They encourage new ways to communicate and share
information.
They give a feeling of a shared community.
Businesses are using them for brand awareness, recruiting,
and networking.
Pitfalls:
Students should be aware of the privacy issues that result
from giving out too much personal information.
Once you post your photos or personal opinions, you no
longer have sole control over them.
The information that you post can be used against you.
Online Education
The online environment can be delivered:
Asynchronously: This allows learning anytime,
anywhere there is an Internet connection. Students
interact by posting discussion questions or
comments in designated areas via a portal—like a
chat room—or via email.
Synchronously: Students meet online in real time
at a specific time for a lecture or to chat.
Student Success Online
Students who are successful in an online environment are
usually those that take responsibility for their own learning
because they are committed to learning.
They are also able to adapt to a new environment that is totally
different from the traditional onsite classroom.
Online students can manage their time and study habits.
This environment is self-directed, and there are strict deadlines
for submitting assignments.
Lastly, the student must be patient in communication.
Communication is usually asynchronous; you might have to wait
for a response from a classmate or instructor.
