Multicultural Elements in ESL Classrooms

Flora D and Najiihah were tasked with reading about multicultural elements and issues concerning young learners in children's literature. They were to prepare a graphic organizer on the readings. Multicultural elements in the classroom include teaching respect and appreciation for different cultures, races, ethnicities, and religions. Both students and teachers accept all people. This is shown through the books read, activities done, and lessons taught. When picking books, it is important that students can relate to characters and situations so they feel valued. Literature should also allow students to make connections between the stories and their own lives and culture.

Classroom
WEEK 4

Flora D, Najiihah
Task
Read on multicultural elements and issues on
concerns of young learners in children’s
literature.

Prepare a relevant graphic organiser based on

readings.
Multicultural Elements
In a Classroom
Includes the learning of appropriate knowledge, attitudes and skills
related to the respect and appreciation of different cultures and
other differences which include race, ethnicity, religion etc.

Both the students and the teacher are accepting of all races,
cultures, and religions.

This acceptance is evidenced by the books that are read, the

activities that are completed, and the lessons that are taught.
Issues
Students are often asked to make connections to what they
are reading, so it is important that they are able to find
characters and situations that they can relate to in the books
that they are reading. Multicultural literature can be used to
create a classroom where all students are valued.

Also, students need to be able to make connections between

literature and their everyday lives. Literature can provide
children with a sense of affirmation about themselves and
their culture.
