Multicultural Elements
In a Classroom
Includes the learning of appropriate knowledge, attitudes and skills
related to the respect and appreciation of different cultures and
other differences which include race, ethnicity, religion etc.
Both the students and the teacher are accepting of all races,
cultures, and religions.
This acceptance is evidenced by the books that are read, the
activities that are completed, and the lessons that are taught.
Issues
Students are often asked to make connections to what they
are reading, so it is important that they are able to find
characters and situations that they can relate to in the books
that they are reading. Multicultural literature can be used to
create a classroom where all students are valued.
Also, students need to be able to make connections between
literature and their everyday lives. Literature can provide
children with a sense of affirmation about themselves and
their culture.
