Sed Structures

Sedimentary structures form in sediment before it is lithified and provide information about the depositional environment. Key structures include cross-bedding which indicates flow direction, graded bedding which shows the top of an event deposit, asymmetrical ripples that point downstream, and mud cracks where the curled edges indicate up. Together, sedimentary structures allow for interpretation of the paleoenvironmental conditions including whether deposition occurred in marine or non-marine settings, under standing or flowing water, and the flow directions of currents or winds.

1b. Cross bedding:

layers within bed are inclined at time
of deposition (not horizontal)
sand moving along as ripples or dunes
formed by water or air
restricted to moving water
