ENGINEERING DRAWING
CHAPTER 3
DIMENSIONS
DIMENSIONS
Should provide all the information necessary for a finished product
or part to manufactured.
Always drawn using continuous thin lines.
Two projection lines indicate where the dimension starts and
finishes.
Projection lines do not touch the object and are drawn
perpendicular to the element of dimensions.
All dimensions less than 1 should have a leading zero. i.e. .35 should be
written as 0.35
DIMENSIONING STANDARD
Technique in dimensioning line types, spacing,
arrowheads, leaders, radius or diameter, etc.
Placement of dimensions in which view should a
dimension be placed
Choice of dimensions Baseline or continued
dimensions
Redundant dimensions must be avoided
TECHNIQUE IN DIMENSIONING
Length:width = 3:1
PLACEMENT OF DIMENSIONS
Avoid dimensions line inside objects
Shorter dimensions are placed closer to the object
Dimensions lines should not cross extension lines
Dimensions lines should not coincide (overlap) with
or continue a line in a drawing
Spacing between dimension lines should be uniform
Dimensions lines should be lined up or grouped
neatly as much as possible
Dimensions lines are perpendicular to extension
lines
Types of Dimensioning
Parallel Dimensioning
Parallel dimensioning consists of several dimensions
originating from one projection line.
Superimposed Running Dimensions
Simplifies parallel dimensions in order to reduce the space
used on a drawing.
The common origin for the dimension lines is indicated by
a small circle at the intersection of the first dimension and
the projection line.
Chain Dimensioning
Combined Dimensions
A combined dimension uses both chain and parallel
dimensioning
IMPORTANT ELEMENTS IN DIMENSIONS
DIMENSIONS OF ANGLES
DIMENSIONS OF SMALL FEATURES
Placing the dimension arrow between projection lines
may create a drawing which is difficult to read.
In order to clarify dimensions on small features any of
the below methods can be used.
DIMENSIONING OF CIRCLES
(a) two common methods of dimensioning
a circle.
First method dimensions the circle
between two lines projected from two
diametrically opposite points.
The second method dimensions the
circle internally. This method is the least
used method.
(b) is used when the circle is too small for
the dimension to be read if it was placed
inside the circle.
(c) dimension of the circle from outside
using an arrow which points directly
towards the centre of the circle.
DIMENSIONING RADII
All radial dimensions are proceeded by the capital R.
All dimension arrows and lines should be drawn perpendicular to the
radius so that the line passes through the centre of the arc.
All dimensions should only have one arrowhead which should point to
the line being dimensioned.
(a) shows a radius dimensioned with the centre of the radius located on
the drawing.
(b) shows how to dimension radii which do not need their centres
locating.
DIMENSIONS WITH AUTOCAD
There are 3 main methods of adding dimensions to
constructed drawing:
1. By selecting a tool from Dimension toolbar.
2. By selecting from Dimension drop-down
menu.
3. By typing dim at the command line, and enter
prompts as required.
Linear Dimension
1. Construct a rectangle: 180 mm long and 100mm wide.
2. Type dimlinear in the command line or click on linear
dimension on the dimensions toolbar.
3. Click on 1 end of line, then click on the other end of that line.
4. Pull the dimension out of the line, and the dimension of the
line appears on the screen.
5. Try it on all sides of the rectangle!
Note: Only two sides of the rectangle should show the
dimensions on an engineering drawing. The other 2 sides are
considered redundant.
Aligned Dimension
Construct this diagram.
Click on the Aligned Dimension tool to label the other two
unlabeled lines.
Diameter Dimension
Construct this diagram using Line and Fillet tools.
Click on the radius Dimension tool to give dimensions to the
other two unlabeled arcs.
Diameter Dimension
Type 1: Construct a circle of radius 120mm.
Call the diameter dimension.
Click on the circle, then click any point INSIDE the circle.
Type 2: Construct another circle.
Call the diameter dimension.
Click on the circle, then click any suitable point OUTSIDE the
circle.
Angular Dimension
Construct any two angles.
Click on the Angular Dimension tool.
Pick 1 arm, then pick the other arm. Lastly, click INSIDE the
angle.
Repeat with selection of the dimension location OUTSIDE the
angle (for example 133).
Quick Dimension
The quick dimension icon is symbolized as a lightning bolt in the
middle of a linear dimension icon. As the name implies, it saves
time by creating multiple dimensions with one command.
Quick Dimension (QDIM) works with continuous, staggered,
baseline, ordinate, radius and diameter dimensions.
Command: qdim
Select geometry to dimension:
Specify dimension line position, or [Continuous/ Staggered/
Baseline/Ordinate/Radius/Diameter/datumPoint/Edit/ settings]

Adding text Using Dimension tool
(Labelling drawing)
Command: dim
Dim: l (for leader)
Leader start: (click a start point for leader)
To point: (click next leader point)
To point: (click next leader point)
To point: ENTER
Dimension text <125>: Chamfer 30 x 30
Or.. Use Quick leader. (the icon is the one with lightning &
the letter A)
