JOB CHARACTERSTICS APPROACH
Recognizes the needs of job design which are
interesting and rewarding.
According to this approach, jobs should
gratify an individual need for recognition,
respect, growth and responsibility.
Herzberg classified these factors into two
categories:
1.Hygiene factor
2. Motivators
Devised by FW Taylor , introduced the idea of
task.
According to this approach, the work or task
of each employee is planned by management
in advance.
Based on the application of scientific
principles of job design.
Work should be scientifically analyzed and
fragmented into logical tasks.
Alsoemphasizes on compensating employees
appropriately and training them continuously
for work efficiency.

Popularized by Hackman and Oldman.
According to this approach there is direct
relationship between job satisfaction and
rewards.
Laid down five core dimensions:

1.Skill variety: The employees must be able to


utilize all their skills and develop new skills
while dealing with a job.
2.Task identity: The extent to which an
identifiable tasks required to be done for
completion of the job.
3.Task significance: How important is the job
to the other people, what impact does it
create on their lives?
4. Autonomy: Does the job offer freedom and
independence to the individual performing
the same.
5.Feedback: Is feedback is necessary for
improving the performance?
Job simplification
Job rotation
Job enlargement
Job enrichment
Meansthat the variety and difficulty of tasks
performed by single employee is reduced.
Itmeans moving employees from job to job
give them greater variety of task so that to
help preventing boredom.
Itis an expansion of a number of different
task performed by an employee in a single
job.
Simplymeans providing responsibility,
recognition and opportunities as motivators
to employees for development and growth.
