ECG Interpretation Basics for Nurses

The document discusses the basics of electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) reading and interpretation for nurses. It aims to enable participants to define ECG correctly, recognize normal ECG waveforms and durations, calculate heart rate, and distinguish normal sinus rhythm. The topics covered include the electrical conduction system of the heart, significance of various ECG intervals like the PR interval and QRS complex, and distinguishing the origin of the heart rate based on the ECG tracing.

NORMAL ECG READING &
INTERPRETATION FOR NURSES:

At the end of this session the participants will be

able to:
1. Define ECG/EKG correctly.
2. Recognize the positions of ECG leads.
3. Define Normal sinus rhythm P, Q, R, S, T
4. Calculate the heart rate using ECG paper.
5. Recognize normal ECG waveform, duration, rate &
rhythm.

REPOLARIZATION Relaxation of any muscle

SA NODE Dominant pacemaker of the heart with an

intrinsic rate of 60-100 beats/min.
AV NODE Backup pacemaker or Gatekeeper of the
heart with an intrinsic rate of 40 60 beats/min.
Ventricular cells (Bundle of His/Purkenji fibers) Backup
