Abraham Lincoln wins the 1860


presidential election and the South
fears he will abolish slavery.
South Carolina votes
to leave, or secede,
from the United
States (Union).
Secessionto leave
or quit.
The South decides to start its
own country.

Fort Sumter, a military fort in SC, is running
low on supplies.
Lincoln tries to send supplies, but the
Confederacy orders everyone to leave.
Major Anderson (Union) refuses to leave.
The South attacks the fort.
Three days later, Anderson surrenders.
The South gains control of the fort.
Lincoln declared that the country was
at war.
Four more states seceded:
o Virginia
o Tennessee
o North Carolina
o Arkansas
TN was the last state to secede.
The Three Grand Divisions didnt
agree.
o Westwanted to secede
o Eastdidnt want to secede
o Middlesplit vote
Fun FactScott County tried to
secede from the state of TN!
The Confederates move their capital to
Richmond, Virginia.
This is only 100 miles from Washington,
D.C.

to move closer to the Mississippi River.

The Confederate Ironclad Merrimac battles the
Union Ironclad Monitor. These are the first metal
covered boats used in war.

Confederates attack Gen. Grants troops near
Shiloh. The battle lasted overnight. Union
reinforcements arrived and pushed the
Confederates south.
More than 20,000 casualties.
