Vibratory Bowl Feeders Incomplete

Vibratory bowl feeders use vibration to orient small parts for automated assembly. There are four main types of part feeders: bowl feeders, linear feeders, centrifugal feeders, and step feeders. Bowl feeders are the most common and use a vibrating bowl with a spiral track to continuously feed parts up through vibration. Bowl feeders come in cylindrical, conical, and stepped designs with different capacities and part size capabilities. The mechanics of vibratory bowl feeders rely on track angle, vibration angle, track amplitude, vibration frequency, and friction to convey parts up the track through sliding or hopping.

Vibratory Bowl Feeders

Alok Goswami
Part Feeders
Part feeders are machines that orient parts so that
robots or other automated processes can capture and
use or package the parts or components

Four Main Types:

Bowl feeders: Most common type. Bowl with a
spiral track inside that feeds up using vibration.

Linear feeders: Horizontal conveying of

components. (conveyor, carpet feeder)
Part Feeder types continued
Centrifugal feeders (or rotary feeders): Use a
bowl that spins and forces parts to the outside of
the bowl. At the outside edge of the bowl, the
parts are channeled into receivers when the parts
are in the right orientation. Usually faster and
less noisy than vibratory feeders.

Step feeders: The component parts are collected

from the hopper by elevating plates, pre-sorted
and fed until they reach the desired transfer
height.
Vibratory Bowl Feeders
A vibratory feeder consists of a parts-orienting bowl mounted
on a vibrating drive unit with a variable-amplitude controller.
The drive unit vibrates the bowl causing parts in the bowl to
move around a track that has been tooled to sort and orient the
parts in accordance with a customer's requirements.

Types of Bowls

Cylindrical Bowl

Conical Bowl

Stepped Bowl
Cylindrical Bowl

These bowls provide a constant feed of components.

They are ideal for small components, but have
restricted capacity for some applications.
(smaller parts, continuous feed)
Conical Bowl

A conical bowl provides a higher capacity and

with an increase in radius.
Where necessary, the standard track width, track pitch
and the amount of tracks can be adapted to suit the
application.
(Heavier or Sharp edge components)
Stepped Bowl

Stepped bowls have a larger feeding track width and

are particularly suited to pre-orientation of
components.
The capacity is larger than that of a cylindrical bowl.
A further advantage is that the components do not jam
in the tracks.
(Larger components)
Mechanics of VBF
The Factors affect conveying velocity are as following:
Track Angle ():Angle of inclination of the feeder track

Vibration Angle(): Angle between track and its line of

From above figure be seen that, for sliding up the track to
occur,
mpa02cos > mpg sin+ F ..(1)
Where
F=sN =s[mpgcosmpaosin] (2)
On putting value of F in eqn (1) and solving we get

.(3)
(Condition for forward sliding up the track)

(4)
(For backward sliding to occur)
The operating conditions of a VBF may be expressed in

terms of the dimensionless normal track acceleration

An/gn ,

An - normal track acceleration(An= an2= ao2sin)

gn - normal acceleration due to gravity(gcos)

Thus,

Condition for forward sliding

(7)
Condition for backward sliding
The limiting condition for forward conveying to occur
is given by comparing eqn (6) and eqn (7)Thus, for
forward conveying,

If is small

With sufficiently large vibration amplitudes, the part

will leave the track and hop forward during each
cycle.
Hopping
This can occur only when the normal reaction N

between the part and the track becomes zero.

N = mpg cos mpa02 sin

EFFECT OF FREQUENCY
For given conditions and for constant track
acceleration (that is, when An/gn is constant), the

mean conveying velocity vm is inversely proportional to

the vibration frequency f. Hence

f vm = constant
