Rechargeable vs Non-Rechargeable Batteries

A battery is a self-contained power pack that produces electrical energy. There are three main types of batteries: chemical, physical, and biological. Chemical batteries include primary batteries that cannot be recharged and secondary batteries that can be recharged, such as lead-acid batteries in cars. A rechargeable battery allows multiple uses by applying a current to charge it after discharge. Rechargeable batteries are more environmentally friendly than disposable batteries but must be charged properly to avoid damage.

BATTERY:

RECHARGEABLE
AND NON
RECHARGEABLE
RCB
WHAT IS A BATTERY?
A BATTERY IS A SELF-CONTAINED, CHEMICAL
POWER PACK THAT CAN PRODUCE A LIMITED
AMOUNT OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY WHEREVER IT'S
NEEDED.
TYPES OF BATTERY
Chemical Battery electrochemistry battery

Primary Battery

Secondary Battery

Physical Battery

Biological Battery
CHEMICAL BATTERY
Chemical battery is a device that transforms positive and
negative electrode active materials into electricity
Primary Battery (Non rechargeable)
Including mercury battery, dry battery (zinc-carbon battery),
alkaline battery (zinc-manganese battery).
Secondary Battery (Rechargeable)
big batteries such as lead-acid battery for cars and
motorcycles.
Another kind of secondary battery is fuel battery. As the
name suggests, it provides electricity for the device to use
through adding fuel.
A TYPICAL LEAD-ACID CAR
BATTERY (ACCUMULATOR).
PHYSICAL BATTERY
Physical battery is a device that transforms
thermal energy and light into electricity, including
solar battery, heat battery and atomic battery.

BIOLOGICAL BATTERY
Biologists transform electricity produced in the
bodies of animals into daily usage. For example,
they generate electricity by incorporating oxygen
with hydrogen produced by the reaction between
carbohydrate and certain enzymes inside micro
organisms.
WHAT IS A RECHARGEABLE
BATTERY?
A rechargeable battery is an energy storage device
that can be changed again after being discharged
by applying DC current to its terminals.
Rechargeable batteries allow for multiple usages
from a cell, reducing waste and generally
providing a better long term investment in terms
of dollars spend for usable device time.
ADVANTAGES
These portable power sources can be used and re-
used a great number of times. Depending on the
technology used, rechargeable batteries can last up
to 200 recharging cycles and some may even reach
thousands.
Rechargeable batteries are considered renewable
(for a finite time span) which makes them
environmentally friendly. Because of their re-
usability, there are fewer batteries going into the
landfills.
DISADVANTAGES

Rechargeable batteries can be easily damaged or

degraded if they are not charged properly.
Rechargeable batteries cost much more than ordinary
disposable batteries.
Due to the elements and electro chemicals used in
these batteries, they may be harmful to the
environment if not disposed properly.
HOW IT WORKS
DISCHARGE
for the discharge, the anode material is oxidized whereas the cathode material is
reduced (obeying the definition for anodes and cathodes in a galvanic cell).
Following to this, the electrons flow from anode (-) to cathode (+). As the anode is
loosing its electrons, it is attracting anions and other way round for the cathode.
Charge
During the process of charging, a voltage is applied and the electrons move in the
other direction (but be careful that (-) and (+) stay at the same sides because the
electrons move now in the direction they left from before). Although now the left
electrode is reduced and the right electrode oxidized, what would also require a
switch of anode and cathode, anode and cathode stay for the convention the same. If
one would change the sides, as a scientist one could not easily talk about anodes and
cathodes anymore because they would depend on the state of the battery (charge vs.
discharge)! Because primary batteries (cannot be recharged) were discovered before
secondary batteries (rechargeable), one keeps the anode and cathode definition for
the discharge (and inverses it for the charge).
