This presentation provides information about polyester. It defines polyester fiber as a manufactured fiber composed of at least 85% by weight of an ester of a dihydric alcohol and terephthalic acid. The document outlines the raw materials used to make polyester, its mechanical and chemical properties, advantages such as durability and recyclability, disadvantages like pilling and lack of breathability, and common uses in clothing, home furnishings, and other products.

Definition
The name "polyester" refers to the linkage of
several monomers (esters) within the fiber. Esters
are formed when alcohol reacts with a carboxylic
acid.

Polyester fiber is a " manufactured fiber in which

the fiber forming substance is any long chain
synthetic polymer composed at least 85% by weight
of an ester of a dihydric alcohol (HOROH) and
terephthalic acid (p-HOOC-C6H4COOH).

Properties
Tenacity : 5-7 gm/denier(gram / 9000 meters).
Elongation At Break : 15-30%.
Elastic Modulus : 90.
Moisture Regain (MR%) : 0.40%.
Color : White.
Luster : Bright.
Glass transition temperature : 67-81 c.
Melting Point : 250 c.
Retains heat set pleats , Accumulates static
electricity.
Mechanical Properties

curve for PET fibers.
A-High tenacity filament

B-High tenacity staple

C-regular tenacity filament

D-regular tenacity staple

Chemical properties
Acids: Good resistance to acids in cold condition. But
polyester degrades by H2SO4 at high temperature.
Basic: Good resistance to basic in cold condition but Strong
NaOH dissolves polyester in boiling.
Effect of bleaching: Polyester does not affected by bleaching
process.
Organic solvent: Organic solvent does not affect on polyester
fiber.
Protection ability against mildew: Good
Protection ability against insects: Good
Dyes: Polyester could be dye with disperse, azoic color and
some pigments.
Demand For Polyester
ADVANTAGES
Relatively inexpensive
Easy to process
More durable
Easy wash & care
Recyclable
Attractive & bright
Abrasion resistance is high
Excellent wet strength
Light-weight
DIS -ADVANTAGES
Pilling's can be found
Less natural feel
Not environmentally friendly
Low thermal resistance
Non-biodegradable material
Hydrophobic property is also a disadvantages as it
doesnt absorb sweat like natural fibers
Uses
Used in outwear , because of its high tenacity &
durability

Used in pants , shirts , suits & bed sheets

Used in every form of clothing

Used in home furnishings like carpets , curtains , sheets

Used in firehose , ropes ,nets , sewing thread , floppy

disk liners etc.
