Principle of Communication

This document discusses the basic principles and elements of communication systems. It explains that communication involves transmitting information from a source to a receiver over a channel. The key elements are an information source, transmitter that modulates the signal, a communication channel, receiver that demodulates the signal, and an output transducer. The transmitter processes and modulates the electrical signal, the channel carries the signal, and the receiver amplifies, demodulates and converts the signal back to its original form for the output transducer.

Principle of Communication
Communication is the means of conveying the
information from one place to another.
Example: sound, picture,music,data
Basic Elements
Transmitter
Channel
Receiver
Elements of Communication System
Information source: speech,sound,pictures etc
Input Transducer :Information is converted into a
suitable electrical signal. Example: Microphone
Transmitter
Process the electrical signal
Modulation is the main function of the transmitter.
The process of imposing an input signal onto a carrier
wave is calledmodulation.
Communication Channel
medium used for transmission of electronic signal from one place to
another.
Guided channel propagation:
Copper wires
Coaxial cable
Optical fibers
Wireless propagation:
Radio broadcast
Mobile
Satellite
Noise
Noise is an unwanted electrical signal which gets added
to the transmitted signal when it is travelling towards
the receiver.
Noise can be natural or manmade.
During the process of transmission and reception the
signal gets distorted due to noise introduced in the
system.
Receiver
The received signal is amplified, demodulated and
converted into a suitable form.
Basic components- Mixer, detector, amplifiers
Demodulation is the reverse process of modulation
carried out in transmitter.
Output Transducer
Converts the electrical signal back to original form.
Example: Speakers, Computer monitor
Bandwidth
Frequency range over which an information signal is
transmitted.
Difference between highest and lowest frequency component.
Also for digital devices, thebandwidthis usually expressed in
bits per second(bps) or bytes per second.
BW=f2-f1
Example :f2=1300hz
f1=300hz
BW=1000hz
Fc=center frequency
