THE 30 GATA DEFENSE
PERSONNEL, FRONTS AND COVERAGES
HENRY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL
NEW CASTLE, KY
PERSONNEL
DOGS-THE KEY IN THIS DEFENSE, HE IS A HYBRID WHO CAN NOT
ONLY DEFEAT THE BLOCK OF THE TE OR FULLBACK, BUT ALSO
COVER MAN TO MAN IF NEEDED. IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE YOU CAN
FLIP SIDES WITH HIM.
TACKLES- QUICKNESS, NOT STRENGTH IS MOST IMPORTANT HERE.
WE NEVER ASK OUR TACKLE TO WHIP THE PLAYER ACROSS FROM
THEM MAN TO MAN.
GUARD- BEST DL, MUST COMMAND A DOUBLE TEAM.
MIKE- TOUGHEST, MOST PHYSICAL LINEBACKER. CAN BE A STEP
SLOWER.
BATS- NEED NOT BE OVERLY BIG PLAYERS, BUT MUST BE ABLE TO
RUN.
SAFETY- MUST BE ABLE TO RUN THE ALLEY AND ALSO BE
EFFECTIVE IN THE PASSING GAME.
CORNERS- BEST ATHLETES ON THE FIELD.

HOW WE PLAYED THE BOOTLEG
D
C
ON BOOTLEG, THE DOG GOES AND PUTS PRESSURE IN THE FACE OF THE QB.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT OUR
COVERAGES?
WE CAN TAKE AWAY THE QUICK SLANT BY
ALIGNMENT.
EVERYONE WILL TRIED THE TE DUMP PASS.
TEAMS WOULD TRY AND BOOTLEG US TO DEATH.
TEAMS WILL RELIED ON PLAYACTION BECAUSE
WE WILL BE VERY AGGRESSIVE.
WE CAN RUSH 4 AND BE SUCCESSFUL, BECAUSE
OUR OPPONENT DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE
PRESSURE WAS COMING FROM.
SPEED KILLS
3-5-3
BLITZ AND STUNT PACKAGE
ADVANTAGES OF THE 30
NOT MANY COACHES KNOW HOW TO BLOCK AND
GAME PLAN FOR IT.
IT IS EXTREMELY FLEXIBLE. NICKLE-DIME
SUBSTITUTIONS CAN EASILY BE MADE WITHOUT
DISRUPTING YOUR WHOLE SCHEME.
THE DEFENSE IS AN 8 MAN FRONT, YET YOU HAVE 5
DEFENSIVE BACKS ON THE FIELD FOR PASS
COVERAGE.
IT ALLOWS THE USE OF SMALLER SPEED TYPE
PLAYERS.
OFFENSES DO NOT KNOW WHO IS COMING OR FROM
WHERE.
IT IS CONFUSING TO OFFENSIVE LINEMEN.
DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY
WE WILL DICTATE WHAT THE OFFENSE RUNS, NOT
THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
WE CAN ADJUST TO ANYTHING WE SEE.
WE ARE NOT COUNTER PUNCHERS, WE DO NOT
REACT; WE ATTACK.
WE NEED A SURGE UP THE FIELD BY OUR DL AND
OUR BLITZES. WE TRY TO MAKE A NEW LOS 1
YARD BACK FROM WHERE IT WAS.
WE WANT ALL 5 OFFENSIVE LINEMEN TO HAVE TO
ACCOUNT FOR OUR 3 DEFENSIVE LINEMEN.
DEFENSIVE POSITIONS
WE SPLIT OUR DEFENSE DOWN THE MIDDLE. A
STRONG SIDE AND A WEAK SIDE. BY DOING THIS IT
SIMPLIFIES OUR CALLS.
OUR OLBS ARE CALLED ROVERS
OUR ILBS ARE CALLED JACK AND QUICK
OUR GUARD AND MIKE ARE IN THE MIDDLE.
YOU CAN ALSO RUN THIS DEFENSIVE BY SIDESRIGHT SIDE/ LEFT SIDE. THE PLAYERS SIMPLY
NEED TO KNOW WHAT SIDE THE ARE ON AS
DICTATED BY THE STRENGTH CALL.
DEFENSIVE CALLING
PROCEDURE
THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO IS MAKE A
STRENGTH CALL. WE DETERMINE OUR STRENGTH
TO THE TE, IF NO TE TO THE 2 RECEIVER SIDE, IF
BALANCED TO THE FIELD.
SOMETIMES THROUGH GAME-PLANNING WE WILL
DECIDE TO ALWAYS CALL THE STRENGTH TO THE
FIELD.
WE WILL ALWAYS MOVE OUR FRONT SO THEN WE
CAN SIMPLY TAG A BLITZ ONTO THE LINE STUNT.

MARRYING CALLS
THE COACH MUST MARRY CALLS
BETWEEN THE LINE CALL AND THE
BLITZ.
EXAMPLE- YOU CANT CALL IN 2
BETTY BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE 2
PEOPLE IN THE SAME GAP. INSTEAD
IN 3 ALICE NEEDS TO CALLED.

DEFENSIVE LINE
TECHNIQUES AND DRILLS
ESSENTIALS OF DEFENSIVE LINE PLAY
1. GET OFF- YOU MUST EXPLODE OFF
THE BALL AND CROSS THE FACE OF
THE MAN YOU ARE LINED UP FROM.
2. PURSUIT- WE STRESS RUN, RUN,
RUN.
3. TACKLING- WORK SOME ASPECT OF
TACKLING EVERYDAY.
What do we want to accomplish?
1.
2.
3.
4.
We want to make our defensive lineman
more productive in the areas of tackling,
pressure and pursuit.
We want to run drills that are specific to
what we do.
If a drill is not football specific- dont do it.
We want to put our defensive linemen in
real-life, game type situations.

STANCE
OUR STANCE IS A THREE POINT STANCE WITH FEET AS CLOSE TO
PARALLEL AS POSSIBLE.
WEIGHT ON THE BALLS OF THE FEET, KNEES IN AND HEELS OFF
THE GROUND
HEAD- TURN YOUR HEAD AND LOOK DOWN THE LOS AT THE BALL.
ARMS- FRONT ARM SHOULD BE WELL IN FRONT OF THE HEAD.
FREE ARM IS COCKED BY THE FACEMASK READY TO STRIKE.
BACK- BUTT MUST BE HIGHER THAN HEAD.
WEIGHT- 60% OF WEIGHT IS ON FINGERTIPS. YOU ARE A COILED
SPRING READY TO EXPLODE.
FEET SHOULD BE NO WIDER THAN SHOULDER WIDTH.
DL NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO STEP WITH EITHER FOOT- LEFT OR
RIGHT.
HEAD IS TURNED LOOKING AT THE FOOTBALL
SLANT/STEPS
GET OFF
INITIAL MOVEMENT MUST BE SIDEWAYS AT A 45% ANGLENOT UP.
LIKE A SPRINTER COMING OUT OF THE BLOCKSCREATE
FORCE.
BACK FLAT
NUMBERS OF YOUR JERSEY OVER YOUR KNEE.
BULL YOUR NECK.
AIM FOR THE HIP OF THE MAN YOU ARE SLANTING ACROSS.
FOLLOW QUICKLY WITH THE 2ND AND 3RD STEPS
STAY LOW AND MAINTAIN LIFT LEVERAGE.
SLANT/STEPS DRILLS
VERY SIMPLE DRILL DONE WITH FLAT DUMMIES ON THE GROUND
COACH GIVES A LINE CALL
(OPEN,CLOSE,JACKS,PINCH,FIELD,BAMA,SOUTH) AND A STRENGTH
CALL.
COACH SNAPS THE BALL AND LOOKS FOR FOOTWORK, EXPLOSION,
FLAT BACK, AND ARM RIP IN GET OFF BY THE DEFENSIVE LINEMEN.
ENGAGEMENT/ BLOW DELIVERY
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN MUST SHOOT OFF HAND ACROSS THE
MAN HE IS SLANTING FROM.
WE ARE AIMING FOR THE HIP OF THE MAN WE ARE
SLANTING TO.
WHEN WE MAKE CONTACT WITH THE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
WE EITHER FINISH OUR RIP OR IF WE GET STONED- BRING
BOTH HANDS UP INTO OF HIS CHESTPLATE, LIFT,
CONTROL OUR GAP AND FIND THE BALL.
WE NEVER WANT TO GET MORE THAN 1 YARD UP THE FIELD.
IF WE EVER COME OFF UNBLOCKED WE TURN AND LOOK
INSIDE.
BLOW DELIVERY
THE MAIN DRILL WE USE TO TEACH BLOW DELIVER IS A 3 POINT
STEP AND RIP DRILL.
DL ARE IN STANCE ACROSS FROM A PLAYER HOLDING A BAG ON
BALL MOVEMENT THEY EXPLODE AND RIP THROUGH THE MAN
ACROSS FROM THEM.
COACH LOOKS FOR FOOTWORK, EXPLOSION, PROPER ARM RIP
AND GETTING TO 1 YARD DEEP.
Pressure drills
Get some.
Part of our hoop drills we do everyday.
The defensive lineman will run two hoops in a figure
eight.
Around the first hoop- he will rip with his inside arm,
against other players punching at him.
Around the second hoop he will perform a quick
swim against other players punching him.
He will finish the drill by strip tackling a dummy.
READ/ PRESSURE
WE WILL READ ON THE RUN- IF AN
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN PRESSURES US WE
WILL PRESSURE BACK BY EITHER
CROSSING HIS FACE OR GOING BACKDOOR.
WE CANNOT GET WASHED UP THE FIELD, BY
FIGHTING PRESSURE WITH PRESSURE AND
NOT GETTING MORE THAN 1 YARD UP THE
FIELD WE CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS.
IF WE SLANT AND OUR MAN TRIES TO CUT
US OFF WE WILL FLATTEN DOWN THE LOS
AND PURSUE TO THE BALL.
READ DRILLS- BACKDOOR
Backdoor
Purpose- to recreate when a defensive
lineman is following a trapping offensive
lineman.
The offensive lineman will fit on the DLs hip
who will then in turn go backdoor to make a
tackle.
Backdoor
Ol will fit up on the hip of a defensive
lineman. The DL will grab the hip of
the offensive lineman and go
backdoor- pursuing flat down the line
of scrimmage.
PURSUIT
WE MUST FIND THE BALL AND TAKE GOOD ANGLES TO
INTERCEPT THE BALL CARRIER.
WE EXPECT 11 HATS TO THE BALL ON EVERY PLAY. YOU
WILL NOT GET GOOD PURSUIT UNLESS YOU STRESS
RUNNING TO THE BALL ON EVERY PLAY IN PRACTICE.
WE RUN EXTRA AFTER PRACTICE FOR LOAFS- NOT
GETTING 11 PEOPLE TO THE BALL ON EVERY PLAY.
WE HAVE NEVER DONE PURSUIT DRILLS, WE
INCORPORATE THEM INTO INSIDE, SKELLY, TEAM ETC.
PURSUIT
THE MAIN DRILL WE USE TO TEACH PURSUIT IS THE FLOW DRILL
ON BALL MOVEMENT DL WILL PERFORM A RIP TO ASSIGNED GAP
WHEN THEY GET TO 1 YARD THE COACH WILL POINT TO THE
RIGHT, LEFT OF UP FIELD. THE DL WILL PLANT AND HUSTLE THAT
WAY.
Pursuit drills
Rabbit
A hoop drill we do everyday
Two players will line up on a hoop. One
player will get a three yard head start.
The two players will run a figure eight, if
player two catches player one, the drill is
over.
Rabbit
Pursuit drills
Read and React
You will need 3 cones in a triangle about 10 yards apart.
On the whistle, the offensive and defensive linemen will make contact, while
the RB will run to one of the cones. The defensive lineman will read and
react to the direction of the ball carrier. Once he has his read the defensive
lineman will shed the OL and make the play before the running back
reaches the L.O.S.
Coaching Points: Make sure the defensive linemen keeps hips and
shoulders square to the LOS. Also teach defensive linemen to extend arms
to keep the OL off of his body. This drill is run at full speed.
Objective: The will help the defensive lineman to read and react while
contact is made. This will also decrease reaction time and increase
aggressiveness.
TACKLING
WE PRIDE OURSELVES IN NOT
MISSING TACKLES.
WE WORK SOME ASPECT OF TACKLING
EVERYDAY IN PRACTICE.
WE NEVER GO HALF SPEED DURING
DEFENSIVE PRACTICE. WE ARE
ALWAYS LIVE, NO DUMMIES, NO PADS,
NO SHORTS MONDAY- THURSDAY.
Tackling
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
We feel that there are 6 basic elements to every
tackle. We work these 6 elements into every tackling
drill we do.
Feet- never gather, always run through the target.
Eyes- always on numbers
Head placement- always up and across the ball.
Chest- lead with your chest not your head.
High cloth- throw arms up and around
Hip roll- act like you have a quarter in your cheeks and
you dont want it to fall out.
Tackling drills
Slip Drill
Purpose: to recreate a defensive lineman slipping
off an offensive lineman and making a tackle.
OL and DL will fit up as if the were engaged with
a block. The running back will then run tight to
either hip of the offensive lineman. The defensive
lineman will have to create separation and find
the ball carrier.
Slip drill
Ol performs a base block and the defensive lineman plays off his block to
locate the ball and make a tackle.
ANGLE TACKLING
T
THIS IS THE MAIN TACKLING DRILL OUR DL DOES
THE DL LINES UP ACROSS FROM ANOTHER LINEMAN AND ON
COMMAND RIPS BY THE OL -THE RUNNING BACK WILL RUN EITHER
RIGHT OR LEFT NEXT TO THE OL. IF THE RUNNING BACK COMES TO
THE SAME SIDE THE DL SLANTED TO THE DL PERFORMS A PROPER
ANGLE TACKLE. IF THE RUNNINGBACK RUNS TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE
THE DL SLANTED TO. HE MUST PLANT, FLOW BACK TO THE RUNNING
BACK AND MAKE THE TACKLE.
TACKLING DRILLS
Speed to burn
We will have two defensive ends in a jetspeed rush coming off each corner.
The defensive ends will have to speed rip by
an offensive lineman and strip tackle a
dummy.
Whoever gets there the fastest is the winner.
Closing
We feel that by putting our defensive
linemen in real-life, game type situations we
will increase production as a unit.
We have seen a steady increase in the
productivity of our defensive linemen in the
three years since we have introduced this
concept.
PASS RUSH
SINCE WE ARE A SLANTING DEFENSE, WE
EXPECT OUR DEFENSIVE LINEMEN TO
ALWAYS BE IN PASS RUSH MODE. OUR
RUN READS AND PASS READS ARE NO
DIFFERENT. WE SLANT- FIND THE BALL
THEN RUN, RUN, RUN.
BUT BECAUSE OUR DL WILL ENGAGE THE
OL AFTER THEY HAVE LOST GROUND TO
CUT US OFF WE MUST USE MORE
TRADITIONAL PASS RUSH MOVES.
THE INTERSECTION
WE TALK ABOUT BEATING THE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN TO THE INTERSECTION. THE INTERSECTION IS
THE POINT AT WHICH HE TRIES TO CUT OFF YOUR SLANT.
IF WE BEAT THE OL TO THE INTERSECTION WE CONTINUE WITH OUR RIP AND WORK UP FIELD, IF HE
KICKS OUT OR BACK AND BEATS US, WE MUST FLIP OUR HIPS AND WORK A MOVE.
THE INTERSECTION
WHAT A GOOD PASS RUSHER
MUST ACCOMPLISH
You must constrict the QBs area.
You must not give the QB time to look around or
throw to a secondary receiver.
You must force him out of his area and throw on the
run.
You must cause the QB to lose confidence in his
blockers.
You must keep your feet moving up field, if your feet
stop you are dead.
You must not get out of your lane.
Principles of pass rush
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
A pass defense is only as good as its rush.
You must get off the ball.
Your transition from run read to pass read
must be seamless.
You must flip your hips and grab cloth.
Never attack a full man.
Always have a counter move ready.
A pass defense is only as good as its
rush.
You only have 3 seconds to get to the QB
so you cant have any wasted movement.
Force the QB to make bad decisions.

Get off
Tennis ball drills- ball must not bounce
twice. (teaches get off and staying low.)
Get off with football, accelerate 10 yards

Hip flip
The most essential element of pass rush.
You must create separation with the offensive
lineman.
If you dont create separation he will hold
you.
By flipping your hips you not only create
separation, but you assure yourself that he
will only get of your body.

Schedule
When we are in individual defense (20
minutes,) the defensive linemen will mostly
work run reads. When we go to skelly (20
minutes) they will shift to pass reads.
Our defensive line coach will work the
same set of drills everyday. We feel that it is
better for us to be great at a few things that
average at a bunch of different skills.

GAME PLANNING
DURING OUR GAME PLANNING SESSIONS WE
DETERMINE WHAT OUR OPPONENTS DO

PLAYS.
WE HAVE PLAYED ENTIRE GAMES WHEN WE
