SMS Routing and Processing Flow

This document outlines the SMS messaging process between various network entities. It shows the MAP signaling interactions between the MSC, VLR, HLR, SMSC and other nodes. When an SMS request is received, the MSC sends a MAP_PROCESS_ACCESS_REQUEST to the VLR. If approved, the MSC sends a MAP_SEND_INFO_FOR_MO_SMS. It then checks if the MSC is the IWMSC, and if not, forwards the message via MAP_MO_FORWARD_SHORT_MESSAGE. For an incoming SMS, the SMSC sends a MAP_SEND_ROUTING_INFO_FOR_SM to the HLR. The HLR then interacts with the MSC
