Athena: Goddess of Wisdom and War

Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, intelligent activity, arts, and literature. She is also known as the goddess of war due to her strategic skill in warfare. Athena became the patron goddess of Athens after winning a contest that presented the city with gifts - she offered an olive tree, which was deemed more useful than the horse offered by Poseidon. As Zeus's favorite child, Athena sprang fully grown and armed from his forehead, and was allowed to use his weapons. She played an important role in many Greek myths and was said to have embodied wisdom.
