Acrylic Resins in Dentistry Explained

This document discusses acrylic resins used in dentistry, including methyl methacrylate. Methyl methacrylate monomer is mixed with poly(methyl methacylate) polymer powder and partially dissolves it to form a dough that gradually polymerizes. Poly(methyl methacylate) resin is transparent, transmits light well, is hard with good tensile strength and modulus of elasticity, and is used to make dentures and other prosthetics.

Acrylic Resin

Acrylic resins are derivatives of

ethylene and contain a vinyl (c=c-) group in their structural
formula.
Two acrylic resins are mostly
used in dentistry are esters of:
1)Acrylic acid ,CH2=CHCOOH
2)Methacrylic acid,
CH2=C(CH3)COOH
These polymerize by addition

Methyl Methacrylate
Poly(methyl methacylate) is the
hardest resin of series with the
highest softening temperature.
Itself is not used rather liquid
monomer methyl methacrylate
is mixed with the polymer
supplied as powder.
Monomer partially dissolves the
polymer to form dough which is
polymerized gradually by
