Construction & NDT Insights

Alliance Technology Resources was incorporated in Malaysia in 2008 to operate in construction services for the oil and gas, mechanical, civil, and electrical industries. It specializes in various construction works including piping, plant upgrades, structures, drainage, and electrical installation. The company performed dye penetrant testing on bellows for its clients which included major steps like surface cleaning, penetrant application, developer application, examination, and documentation of any indications found. The dye penetrant process is used to detect surface defects in materials.

Dye Penetrant Testing For bellows
Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), also called Dye
Penetrant Inspection (DPI) and Penetrant Testing
(PT), is widely used to detect surface defects in:

Surface Cleaning process

Solvent cleaning method:
Removal of any:
rust
welding flux
spatter, and in general
inorganic soils
the surfaces to be inspected shall be
cleaned, with solvent cleaner and then
finally with a dry free cloth.

Drying Process
The drying process shall be accomplished

by normal evaporation.
It depend on temperature environment, to
ensure that the cleaning solution has been
evaporated prior to application of the
penetrant.
After the area has been cleaned. Dried with
the temperature of the surface and
penetrant are within the range of 80 F
(10 C) to 125 F (52 C)

Application of penetrant
The penetrant shall be sprayed directly to

the surface to be inspected by means of

aerosol container, so that the entire area
under inspection is completely covered.
The length of time the penetrant must
remain on the part to allow proper
penetration shall be 10 to 30 minutes
(dwell time shall not exceed the maximum
recommended by the manufacturer).

Apply penetrant on bellow

Excess Penetrant removal

After 30 minutes, any penetrant remaining

on the surface shall be removed with a dry

or slightly moistened cloth of solvent
cleaner.
It care to minimize removal of penetrant
from possible discontinuity.
Flushing the surface with solvent cleaner
following the application of the penetrant
and prior to developing is prohibited

Drying after removal of excess

penetrant
The drying process shall be accomplished

by normal evaporation.
Drying time shall be minimum 1 minute.
The source of the lighting for drying
process in this project is natural lighting.

Application of the developer

Apply the non-aqueous wet developer

directly to the area being inspected

by spraying from the aerosol container. The
non-aqueous developer evaporates rapidly at
room temperature and therefore does not
require the use of a dryer.
Areas being inspected shall be sprayed in
such a manner so as to assure complete
coverage with a thin, even film of developer.
Dipping or flooding parts with non-aqueous
developer is prohibited

Developer dry

Examination
Inspection shall be carried out after the

applicable developer dwell time to allow for

bleed out of penetrant from discontinuities
into the developer coating.
It is good practice to observe the bleed out
while applying the developer as an aid in
interpreting and evaluating indications.
The light source, technique used, and light
level verification is required to be
demonstrated, one time, documented, and
maintained on file.

Evaluation of indications

All indications shall be evaluated in accordance with the

referencing code or Specification.

Relevant indications are those that result from mechanical
discontinuities.
Linear indications are those indications in which the length is
more than three times the width.
Rounded indication or indications which are circular or elliptical
with lengths less than three times the width.
Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re-tested to
verify whether or not actual defects are present.
Localized surface imperfections may occur, such as machine
marks, surface conditions, or incomplete bond between base
metal and cladding, may produce similar indications which are
not relevant to the detection of unacceptable discontinuities.

Post cleaning
When completion of the test, in cases

where residual penetrant or developer

could interfere with subsequent processing
or with service requirements, a suitable
technique, such as a water rinse or solvent
soak for cleaning may be employed.

Documentation
Non-rejectable indications shall be recorded

as specified by the referencing Code

Section.
Rejectable indications shall be recorded.
As a minimum, the type of indications
(linear or rounded), location and extent
(length or diameter or aligned) shall be
recorded.
After that, make a report and send to the
client.

CONCLUSION

After

going through the training the student can improve the way
people communicate outside the industry.
Interact with the staff and the organization has been able to
increase student self-confidence in the face of society.

Not only that, through the Industrial Training experience allows

students to adapt to the environment and people. It also teaches
student to become more mature in the execution of the work.

The Industrial Training is very important for students to prepare

ourselves mentally and physically to face the world of challenge.

If students encounter any problems during the Industrial Training

assignments whether related or industrial training it, students
are encouraged to discuss with the supervisor and the faculty
supervisor until settlement can be achieved.

In this NDT course, many new things which were not previously
studied in TATIUC are practiced in the training industry.
