InTASC Standards: Content Mastery Strategies

This document discusses INTASC Standard 5 which is about applying content knowledge. It states that teachers should connect concepts using different perspectives to engage students in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to real world issues. It then provides examples from a quadratic formula lesson plan that shows how a teacher applied this standard by having students work individually and collaboratively to solve rigorous problems, while allowing different approaches and cultural relevance. Student work samples are presented as evidence that this helped students learn effectively.

INTASC STANDARDS
InTASC Standard 4: Content Knowledge: The teacher understands the
concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she
teaches and create learning experiences that make the discipline accessible
and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content.
InTASC Standard 5: Application of Content: The teacher understands
how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in
critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to
authentic local and global issues.

INTASC STANDARD #5:

APPLICATION OF CONTENT
The teacher understands how to connect concepts and
use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical
thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving
related to authentic local and global issues.
Each area of the standard above can be identified throughout this
presentation based on the following color coding descriptions:
Understanding how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives
Engaging learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative
problem solving
Connecting concepts to real world situations that resemble authentic
local and global issues

PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

By giving my
students a variety of
strategies to
approach a problem,
I am providing them
with appropriate
techniques that will
teach them to use
critical thinking,
reasoning, and
problem solving
skills in the
classroom, leading
them to mastery of

Connecting
Concepts
In creating a unit or
individual lesson
plan, I always take
into consideration the
differing perspectives
from which students
may have learned
their prerequisite
skills and use those
considerations to
connect the Algebra I
concepts being
learned in an
engaging and
beneficial way.

Problem Solving
Throughout each
lesson, I encourage
my students to use
basic problem
solving and
reasoning skills that
will help them to
understand the local
and global issues the
face outside of the
classroom

Varied Teaching Methods
By alternating the methods of
learning from individual, to small
group, to whole group, I give my
students the opportunity to hear
different perspectives on the
assignment from their peers,
encouraging them to collaborate in
ways that promote problem
solving and critical thinking skills
while being creative in their
execution of the assignment.
Connecting Concepts
By connecting concepts from
previous units to this lesson, I
display that I am capable of

Rigor and Application

The level of rigor of the written assignment within this
lesson is extremely high, requiring critical thinking an
problem solving skills from both the individual and the
collaborative. Students are truly applying the content
they have learned to the assignment and are engaged
in the lessons content and activities.
Differing Perspectives
Students are able to identify the differing
perspectives and methods with which they can solve
quadratic functions.
Cultural Authenticity
Most of the students that I teach take the opportunity
to write a rap about the quadratic formula. The
creative aspect of this assignment displays my ability
to teach the content from different perspectives,

Student Success
My understanding of how to connect
concepts in a way that promotes
student mastery and the use of
collaborative critical thinking and
problem solving skills can clearly be
seen in the work produced by my
students. Even who posed with an
extremely rigorous, above grade
level assignment, my students have
learned how to perservere and lean
on their classmates to accomplish
