A320 Ground Speed Mini Function Guide

This document describes the Ground Speed mini function, which prevents an aircraft's energy from dropping below a minimum level during final approach. It does this by setting the IAS target speed as the maximum of VAPP or VAPP plus the difference between the current and tower reported headwinds. As the headwind increases from 20 to 50 knots, the current and managed speeds increase to maintain higher energy. When the headwind decreases back to 20 knots, the speeds decrease but in a controlled manner to avoid losing too much energy. The Ground Speed mini function operates automatically without displaying to the crew.
