Understanding the Greenhouse Effect

The document discusses the greenhouse effect and global warming. It defines the greenhouse effect as certain gases in the atmosphere trapping infrared radiation from the Earth's surface, causing warming. It notes this effect is natural but could become stronger due to human activities like burning fossil fuels, increasing CO2 levels and global temperatures. The major greenhouse gases are identified as water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone. The summary concludes by noting global warming could increase diseases and some ways to reduce warming like using renewable fuels and recycling.

INTRODUCTION
 Greenhouse effect- The greenhouse
effect occurs when certain gases in the
atmosphere (the air around the Earth) entrap
infrared radiation.

 The greenhouse effect is natural.

 The greenhouse effect is important. Without the

greenhouse effect, the earth would not be warm
enough for humans to live. But if the
greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could
make the earth warmer than usual. Even a little
extra warming of the earth may cause problems
for humans, plants and animals.
Why it is named green house effct:
 This phenomena is named as greenhouse effect
bceause it is similar to a similar to a greenhouse
for plants . A greenhouse is a place where plants
are grown on the soil but there are walls and
roof made of glass. The sun’s energy can enter
through the glass but cannot go out of it . This
energy is thus absorbed by the soil and the
structure of the green house . The energy thus
absorbed is re-emitted back into the
greenhouse. Hence it is called greenhouse
effect.
The components of greenhouse
 effect:
The major greenhouse gases are water vapour (not
including clouds), carbon dioxide, methane, and ozone.
 Other greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to,
nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride ,
hydrofluorocarbons , perfluorocarbons and
chlorofluorocarbons.
 Some greenhouse gases come from natural sources.
Evaporation adds water vapour to the atmosphere.
 Animals and plants release carbon dioxide when they
respire, or breathe.
 Methane is released naturally from some low-oxygen
environments, such as swamps.
 Nitrous oxide is produced by certain processes in soil
and water.
 Volcanoes—both on land and under the ocean—release
greenhouse gases, so periods of high volcanic activity
tend to be warmer.
Greenhouse effect – increase in global
warming:
 If the rate at which the solar radiation are arriving
the earth remains constant but the amount of
CO2 in the air increases , the heat radiated back
to the earth will increase.

 As a result temperature of the earth’s surface will

increase.

 Due to this higher global temperature is likely to

increase the incidence of infectious diseases like
malaria , dengue , yellow fever and sleeping
sickness.

 This increase in global temperature is called

GLOBAL WARMING.
Increase of carbon dioxide gas in the
atmosphere:
 Carbon dioxide is increased for the following

reasons;

1. Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning

and power plants
2. Carbon dioxide emissions from burning gasoline
for transportation.
3. Another way humans release CO2 into the
atmosphere is by cutting down forests, because
trees contain large amounts of carbon.
4. Fluorinated gases include chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs),hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and
hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These gases are
used inaerosol cans and refrigeration.
How to reduce global warming :

 By preferring walking or bicycles or public

transport.

 By planting more trees .

 By avoiding burning of dry leaves.

 Look for Renewable Fuel Options.

 Use fluorescent Light Bulbs.

 Recycle your organic waste.
