Daylight Harvesting & Human Detection System

The document proposes a technique to integrate daylight harvesting and human detection using a digital image sensor and processing. It involves using background subtraction on video from a stationary camera to detect moving objects and control lighting. The system divides the image into segments and uses the root mean square (RMS) value of each segment to detect motion and adjust lighting if the brightness is below or above set thresholds. This technique allows both occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting with one sensor to efficiently control lighting.

Introduction

In present scenario commercial buildings completely rely on

artificial lighting with very less use of daylight.

Daylight Harvesting refers to systems that use daylight to

offset the amount of electric lighting needed to properly light a

space

Advantages
22

A single sensor overcomes the limitation of a

photosensor as well as an occupancy sensor.

The system can meet different target light-level

requirements for different task areas within the

field-of-view of the sensor.
It is unaffected by direct sunlight or a direct view of a

light source.

11/21/15

Advantages
23

Capable of detecting small movements.

Allows real-time energy monitoring and

performance analysis.
Problem of people or objects partially blocking

the sensors view of the task areas can be

circumvented.

Conclusion
27

In our project we are able to control the lights of a

room combining the daylight estimation,

occupancy detection and the lighting control
algorithms.
It overcomes most of the drawbacks faced by the

sensor methods, thus we are able to achieve the

expected results.
