UPS Company History and Development

United Parcel Service (UPS) was founded in 1907 and has grown to become one of the largest transportation and logistics companies in the world. As UPS expanded throughout the 20th century, it began using new technologies like delivery trucks and aircraft. However, by the 1980s UPS realized it was falling behind competitors like FedEx in adopting information technologies. This document analyzes UPS' options to develop its information systems - it can either hire information technology professionals from outside the company or develop internal talent. The recommendation is a hybrid approach - initially hire outside experts while continuing to internally develop employees' information technology skills.
