HISTORY OF 3D
PRINTING
3D printing was invented in the year 1984 by Charles Hull with the advancements in
printing methods after the invention of inkjet printers in the year 1976.
Charles Hull is the co-founder, executive vice president and chief technology officer of
3D systems.
CONT...
1984
Charles Hull developed the first 3D printer and named the technique as
Stereolithography.
Later 1990's
Other companies developed 3D printers.
2005
Z Corp launched first high definition color 3D printer.

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING?
The technology used for printing physical 3d objects from digital out
is called 3d printing.
It is also called RAPID PROTOTYPES.
The technique used in printing 3D objects is called as Additive
Manufacturing.
ADDITIVE
MANUFACTURING:
It is a method of converting a virtual 3D model into a physical
object.
The term additive manufacturing refers to technologies that
create objects through a sequential layering process.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES / WORKING:
Modeling
Printing
Finishing
MODELING:
Additive manufacturing takes virtual blueprints from computer aided design (CAD)
or animation modeling software and "slices" them into digital cross-sections for the
machine to successively use as a guideline for printing
PRINTING
To perform a print, the machine reads the design and lays down successive layers of liquid,
powder, or sheet material to build the model from a series of cross sections.
These layers, which correspond to the virtual cross sections from the CAD model, are
joined together or automatically fused to create the final shape.
The primary advantage of this technique is its ability to create almost any shape or
geometric feature.
FINISHING :

VARIOUS TECHNOLOGIES :
Stereo lithography
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)
Multi-jet Modeling(MJM)
Ink jet 3D printing
ADVANTAGES :
RAPID PROTOTYPING: 3D printing gives designers the ability to quickly turn concepts into 3D
models or prototypes (a.k.a., rapid prototyping).
CLEAN PROCESS Wastage of material is negligible.(oral ..)
COMPLEX SHAPE can be produced .
EASY TO USE No skilled person needed.
REDUCE DESIGN COMPLEXITY
CHEAP Cheaper process than any other process.(oral)
People in remote locations can fabricate objects that would otherwise be inaccessible to them.
DISADVANTAGES
:
L Process is slow
L Components do not have enough strength.
L COST OF RAW MATERIALS
L
3-D printers are still expensive.
L Misuse of technology
L
Although 3-D printers have the potential of creating many jobs and
opportunities, They might also put certain jobs at risk .
FUTURE SCOPE
With today's 3D printers, if you lose your TV remote's battery cover you can print a replacement
battery cover. With tomorrow's, if you lose your remote, you'll be able to print a new remote.
3D printers are always getting cheaper and better.
There is currently research going on to create 3D printers that could print out organs for people
in need of a transplant.
Within a decade, 3D printers will become commonplace in houses.
The benefits of such technology are endless.
CONCLUSION
Nothing communicates ideas faster than a three-dimensional part or model. With a
3D printer you can bring CAD files and design ideas to life right from your
desktop. Test form, fit and function and as many design variations as you like
with functional parts.
