When and where was it
discovered?
When was it discover
- The wreck of the RMS Titanic is located about
370 miles (600 km) south-southeast of the
coast of Newfoundland, lying at a depth of
about 12,500 feet (3,800 m).
Where was it discoverd
- Until 1985, the location of the wreck was unknown.
- September 1, 1985 was the day that the Titanic was
meant to be found.
- The wreck was finally located, 13.2 miles (21.2 km)
from the inaccurate position transmitted by Titanic's
crew while the ship was sinking.
- The wreck lies in two main pieces about a third of a
mile (0.6 km) apart. The bow is still largely
recognizable, in spite of its deterioration and the
damage it suffered hitting the sea floor, and has a
great deal of preserved interiors.
When as it discovered
- Following the discovery of the wreck site, Ballard returned to
Titanic in July 1986 aboard the research vessel RV Atlantis II.
Now the deep-diving submersible DSV Alvin could take people
back to Titanic for the first time since her sinking, and the
remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason Jr. would allow the
explorers to investigate the interior of the wreck. Another
system, ANGUS, was used to carry out photo surveys of the
debris field. Jason Jr. descended the ruined Grand Staircase as
far as B Deck, and photographed remarkably well preserved
interiors, including some chandeliers still hanging from the
ceilings.
- In June 1993, over the course of fifteen days, another 800
artifacts were recovered during the expedition including a
two-tonne piece of a reciprocating engine, a lifeboat davit and
the steam whistle from the ship's forward funnel.
- The 1996 expedition controversially attempted to raise a
section of Titanic itself, a section of the outer hull that
originally comprised part of the wall of two First Class cabins
on C Deck, extending down to D Deck.
-Till now the expedition searching for RMS Titanic are still

Old Money
In a Friday, Aug 15, 2008 file photo, currency, part of the artifacts collection of the Titanic, is
shown at a warehouse in Atlanta. After years of litigation over the wreck and its artifacts, U.S.
District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith is expected to rule soon on the largest collection of
Titanic salvage. The judgmentin one of the nation's top maritime courtsis intended to
ensure the 5,900 pieces of china, ship fittings and personal belongings won't end up in a
collector's hands or in a London auction house, where some Titanic artifacts have landed.
Titanic Expedition
This photo August 2010 provided by RMS Titanic Inc., shows The last davit remaining on the
wreck of RMS Titanic. These lifeboat cranes were used to hoist the ship's wooden lifeboats
over the side and into the water during Titanic's sinking. Many of the boats launched soon after
the sinking were not close to fullpassengers refused to believe the seriousness of the
situation. Scientists were in court in Norfolk Va. revealing never-before-seen images of the
Titanic and the ocean bottom where the violently strewn remnants of the world's most famous
shipwreck rest nearly a century after it sank on its maiden voyage.
