HOW TO PRAY
SALAAH
For Beginners
1. TAHAARAH
a) Make sure you are ritually clean
to perform Salaah. Perform wudu,
ghusl, or tayammum if necessary.
b) Make sure that your clothes and
place of worship is free from
impurities.
2. Make a sincere intention to
perform the Salaah purely for the
sake of Allaah s.w.t.
Intention (niyat) is in the heart. It
should not be said out loud.
3. Stand and face the
Qiblah (direction of
prayer in Makkah).
Look down on the
ground.
4. Raise both hands up to the level
of the shoulder or ears and say:
"Allaahu Akbar"
("Allaah is the greatest")
5. Hold the left hand
with the right hand on
top and say:
Aoodu bil-laahi minash-
shaytaanir-rajeem"
(I seek Allaah's protection from Satan, the accursed ")
This posture is called qiyam
6. Recite Al-Faatihah:
Bismil-laahir Rahmaanir Raheem.
Maaliki yawmid deen.
Ar rah-maanir raheem.
Al hamdu lil-laahi rab-bil aalameen.
Iyyaka nabudu wa iyyaka
nastaeen.
Siraatal ladeena an amta alayhim,
gayril magdoobi alayhim, wa lad-
daal-leen. (Aameen)"
ih-dinas siraatal mustaqeem.
7. Recite a short chapter
or a few verses from the
Holy Quraan.
Example: AL-IKHLAS
Qul huwal-laahu ahad,
Wa lam yakul-lahu kufuwan
ahad.
Allaahus-samad,
Lam yalid wa lam yoolad,
Bismillaahir rahmaanir raheem
8. Raise your hands &
say:
Subhaana Rab-bi al-
adeem" 3x
(Glorified is my Lord, the Great.")
This position is called RUKOO.
"Allaahu Akbar"
Bend your body,
and say:
9. Stand up, raise your
hands while saying:
Sami Allaahu liman
hamidah "
(Allaah listens to him who praises Him.")
Rab-bana wa lakal
hamd "
(Our Lord, praise be for you only .")
10. Say :
Subhaana Rab-bi al-alaa " 3x
(Glory to you my Lord, the Highest.")
"Allaahu Akbar"
And prostrate to
the ground, saying:
This position is called Sujood.
11. Rise from sujood while saying:
"Allaahu Akbar"
This position is called Juloos.
Sit, then say:
"Rabbigfir lee war
hamnee"
"O my Lord, forgive me and have Mercy on
me"
12. Say :
Subhaana Rab-bi al-alaa " 3x
(Glory to you my Lord, the Highest.")
"Allaahu Akbar"
And make sujood a
second time, saying:
This completes 1 Rakah or unit of
prayer.
13. Saying:
Assume the position of
Qiyam once again to
begin the second rakah.
"Allaahu Akbar"
Recite again Al-Faatihah
and a short chapter or
some verses from the
Quraan.
14. Raise your hands &
say:
Subhaana Rab-bi al-adeem"
3x
(Glorified is my Lord, the Great.")
"Allaahu Akbar"
Make RUKOO, then
say:
15. Stand up, raise your
hands while saying:
Sami Allaahu liman
hamidah
(Allaah listens to him who praises Him.")
Rab-bana wa lakal
hamd
(Our Lord, praise be for you only .")
16. Say :
Subhaana Rab-bi al-alaa " 3x
(Glory to you my Lord, the Highest.")
"Allaahu Akbar"
And make sujood,
saying:
17. Rise from sujood while saying:
"Allaahu Akbar"
Sit, then say:
"Rabbigfir lee war hamnee
O my Lord, forgive me and have Mercy on me"
18. Say :
Subhaana Rab-bi al-alaa " 3x
(Glory to you my Lord, the Highest.")
"Allaahu Akbar"
And make sujood a
second time, saying:
This completes the second (2
nd
) Rakah.
19. Rise from sujood while saying:
"Allaahu Akbar"
Sit, lift up your right
index finger and
move it up & down,
while reciting the following prayers.
At-tahiyaatu lil-laah, was
salawaatu wat-tayyibat.
As-salaamu alayka
ayyuhan nabee, wa
rahmatul-laahi wa
barakatuh.
As-salaamu a'layna wa
a'laa ibaadil-laahis
saaliheen.
Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha
illal-laah,
wa ash-hadu anna
Muhammadan abduhu wa
rasooluh.
Tashahud
"Allaahumma salli alaa
Muhammad wa alaa aali
Muhummad,
kama sallayta alaa
Ibraheem, wa alaa aali
Ibraheem,
innaka hameedun majeed.
Wa baarik a'laa
Muhammad, wa alaa aali
Muhummad,
kama baarakta alaa
Ibraheem, wa alaa aali
Ibraheem,
innaka hameedun majeed."
Salaat Alan-Nabee
20. TASLEEM
As-salamu alaykum
wa rahmatullaah"
This completes a 2 Rakah salaah.
Turn to the right
and say:
Turn to the left
and say:
As-salamu alaykum
wa rahmatullaah"
A Closer Look at the RUKOO Position
Look at the
ground where
you will put
your head in
sujood.
Both hands
on your
knees.
The back
should be
straight
forming a
90 angle.
Forehead & nose
are both touching
the ground.
A Closer Look at the SUJOOD Position
Arms are not
touching the
ground.
Toes are bent
& pointing to
the Qiblah.
Hands are
spread &
pointing to the
Qiblah.
Elbows are not
touching the legs
& body.

Both hands on
your lap.
Eyes are
looking at the
ground.
Right foot is
straight up
and the toes
are pointing
to the Qiblah.
Sit on your left
foot.
