In Port Watchstanding
Primary duty of in port watch section is to
ensure the safety and security of the ship
Command Duty Officer (CDO)
The Command Duty Officer in port is that
officer or authorized Petty Officer
designated by the Commanding Officer to
carry out the routine of the unit in port and
to supervise the Officer of the Deck in the
safety and general duties of the unit. In the
temporary absence of the Executive Officer,
the duties of the Executive Officer will be
carried out by the Command Duty Officer.

Command Duty Officer
Officer-in-charge of the entire in port duty section
for 24 hour period
set the tone for the performance of the duty
section
conducts frequent inspections and drills
Responsible for the safety and security of the
entire ship
Reports to the XO, or, in his absence, directly to
the CO regarding the discharge of their duties
XO ashore = CDO performs XOs duties
taking reports from DH, conducting messing and berthing
inspections, signing the Plan of the Day
Prepared to get the ship u/w at a moments notice
Duties of CDO
conduct frequent and random inspections
throughout the ship, keeping an eye out for
hazards, cleanliness, crew appearance, work in
progress, etc
always inform the Quarterdeck of whereabouts
attempt to be on the Quarterdeck for
arrival/departure of CO and XO so they can pass
on necessary information
conduct drills by emergency response teams and
critique them
inform CO and XO of drill if they are onboard
observe colors and sunrise
watch for sudden or unexpected changes in
weather
know status of ships boats
frequently spot check hazardous storage areas
know status of engineering plant
mental preps to respond to

Officer of the Deck (OOD)
The Officer of the Deck in port is that officer or
petty officer on watch designated by the
Commanding Officer to be in charge of the unit.
He/she is primarily responsible for the safety and
proper operation of the unit.

Quarterdeck
The Commanding Officer of a ship shall establish the
limits of the quarterdeck and the restrictions of its use. The
quarterdeck shall embrace so much of the main or other
appropriate deck as may be necessary for the proper
conduct of official ceremonial functions.

proper operation of the command.

Petty Officer of the Watch (POOW)
The petty officer of the watch is the primary
enlisted assistant to the officer of the deck in
port.

Assist the OOD throughout the watch in carrying
out the ships routine
Overall in charge of the watch team
Answers the phone, makes 1MC announcements,
and tasks the messenger
Assists in training and inspecting watches
Normally armed with pistol
Messenger of the Watch (MOW)
Usually a junior, non-rated sailor
Detailed by the OOD and POOW to perform
various duties

Sounding and Security Patrol
Makes random and continuous rounds about the
ship, in search of fire, flooding, or security

security breaches
