WeChat allows group chats of unlimited size, video calling, voice messaging, sharing photos and videos publicly, connecting with anyone using the "Look Around" feature, and augmented reality games like "Drift Bottle." WhatsApp is limited to groups of 30, lacks video calling and advanced sharing features, but has the advantage of privacy and no social integration. Overall, WeChat offers more social networking capabilities while WhatsApp focuses solely on private messaging.

WHATSAPP MESSENGER

What is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp Messenger is a proprietary, cross-platform instant

messaging application for smartphones.

In addition to text messaging, users can send each other

images, video, and audio media messages.

The client software is available for Android, BlackBerry OS,

BlackBerry 10, iOS, Series 40, Symbian (S60), and Windows Phone.
WhatsApp was handling ten billion messages per day as of

August 2012, growing from two billion in April 2012 and one billion the previous October

The Company
WhatsApp Inc. was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum,

both veterans of Yahoo! and is based in Santa Clara, California.

The company is a tight compact group of 11-50 people. WhatsApp, has secured $8 million in financing from Sequoia Capital,

and possibly other investors. This funding keeps the company afloat despite high running costs (data storage, servers etc.)

Technical Aspects
WhatsApp uses Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol

(XMPP).
o Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP). o It is a communications protocol for message-oriented

middleware based on XML (Extensible Markup Language).

o The protocol was originally named Jabber, it is used for near real-

time, instant messaging (IM), presence information, and contact list maintenance.
o It is also used for video, file transfer and gaming.

Upon installation, it creates a user account using one's phone number

as username (Jabber ID: [phone number]@s.whatsapp.net).

WhatsApp software automatically compares all the phone numbers

from the device's address book with its central database of WhatsApp users to automatically add contacts to the user's WhatsApp contact list.

Features
Send WhatsApp conversation history to someone Change the WhatsApp chat wallpaper

Save the photos youve received Create shortcuts to WhatsApp conversations Choose a WhatsApp profile picture

Send much more than just text. Change your WhatsApp status Broadcast a WhatsApp message to many contacts Group chats

Where does the money come from? WhatsApp Revenues

WhatsApp does not spend a penny on advertising, again saving

costs. They rely on word of mouth publicity. We can say WhatsApp has killed BB market in India.
Currently WhatsApp has over 100 million subscribers, and suppose

80 million are non-iOS users, they will earn a cool $160 million easily.
But in India however even after completion of one year they are

extending some months limit for free usage every time.

Reliance Communications has announced its exclusive partnership

with WhatsApp in India.

The cost of downloading WhatsApp on iTunes is only 99 cents, and

on other platforms is available for free. But there is a catch,

WhatsApp is free only for the first year. Second year onwards there

is a fee for $1.99 for a period of 3 years, and this is where they are going to make money.
WhatsApps website is simple. Which means they do not spend

here to maintain it.

WeChat is better than WhatsApp?

1. In WhatsaApp you can add only 30 members in a group. But in WeChat there is no restriction for group chat and you can add as many members you like. 2. There is video call feature in WeChat like Skype. So you don't need to install separate software for video calling. 3. You can send voice message through this client. It is the first software to have this feature. 4. It has more pre-loaded emoticons than WhatsApp. Many prefer to add emoticons in the end of their message and those people will love this feature. You can convert any picture into emoticons which make the WeChat emoticon feature special.

5. You can login in WeChat using your Facebook profile. So you don't need to waste your time by registering a new profile. In WhatsApp you need to create a separate profile.

6. You can share picture and videos using WeChat not only to your friend but to the whole world using WeChat client. There are already 300 million WeChat users. Its just like posting you photos in public.
7. Using WeChat you can connect anyone in the world. You can connect to anyone who is online in WeChat client. This feature is called as 'Look Around' in WeChat. 8. WeChat has another excellent feature called Drift Bottle. It means you should record your voice in a bottle and throw it in the sea. Someone in the WeChat will pick that and listen to your voice. Also you can pick some others bottle in the sea and listen to them.
